Stravinsky is buried near Diaghilev in the Russian corner of San Michele Cemetery, Venice, Italy Sergei Diaghilev, Russian ballet impresario, introduced Stravinsky’s first Ballet, giving him his chance to turn music upside down.

Orchestrations turned Ballets

Part I The ballet is a journey of the hero, Prince Ivan. He enters a magical kingdom ruled by the wicked Kashchei. Part II While wandering in the gardens, Ivan sees and chases a beautiful Firebird. When he catches it, the Firebird begs for its life. It promises to help Ivan sometime in the future if he will free it. He agrees and lets it go. Part III Next, Prince Ivan sees thirteen princesses. He falls in love with one of them. Part IV Ivan asks one of the princesses to marry him. Kashchei finds out and sends his magical creatures after Ivan to stop the romance. Then Kashchei himself appears! Part V The Firebird, true to its pledge, comes to help. It bewitches the creatures and makes them dance an energetic dance called the “Infernal Dance.” While Kashchei is bewitched, the Firebird tells Ivan the secret to Kashchei’s immortality—his soul is contained inside an enormous, magical egg. Ivan destroys the egg, putting an end to the evil Kashchei. Part VI With Kashchei gone and his spell broken, the magical creatures and the palace all disappear. All of the “real” beings, including the princesses, awaken and with one final burst of the Firebird’s music, they celebrate their victory.

Part II Listen for the “Petrushka chord” in this scene. It begins with a drumroll as Petrushka is kicked through the door. His antics are accompanied by the “Petrushka chord.” As he shows his anger at the portrait of the magician, the trumpets blast the “Petrushka chord.” Falling into despair as the frightened ballerina hurries away, the clarinets mock him with the “Petrushka chord.” As he shouts at the magician, the whole orchestra mocks him—again, with the “Petrushka chord!”
