Dr. Carsten Schwarz The 1:50,000 Geological Map of Lower Saxony (GK50digital) Geological Information in a New Form – Concept, Content and Products -
Dr. Carsten Schwarz high quality of information easy to apply for many purposes fast availibility user-orientated formate Scale 1 : 50,000 covering the whole area of ower Saxony Private Users Water Recources Raw Materials Contruction Industry Geological Information Environmental Protection Requirements
Dr. Carsten Schwarz The GK50-Map Series is... a digital information system for the illustration of the geological situation in entire Lower Saxony (i.e. as „Base Map“ in scale 1 : 50,000 with geo-information down to 2 m depth), based on geological data from historical and recent recources, archives and publications from the fields of geology, soil science and peat science. All data are evaluated, compiled and then stored in a digital information system.

Dr. Carsten Schwarz The GK50-Map Series will be... available for all of Lower Saxony by the end of 2005, no longer printed, but available in digital format, produced in an up to date standard as plot or CD-ROM only when ordered by a customer and delivered and billed immediately, flexible enough to meet the customers needs (i.e. content of information, data format) immediately. Plot/CD-ROM can be produced as desired by the customer.

Dr. Carsten Schwarz Benefits and Strength... (1) Representation of current geological facts in a uniform style for all of Lower Saxony. Development of a homogeneous database in the preferred scale 1 : 50,000, which is mainly used in administrative bodies all over the country. Option to create maps showing areas that normally belong to more than one map sheet (no longer „sheet-related- boundaries“ of geological units). Map information can be obtained either as a plot (map) or digital database (i.e. CD-ROM).
Dr. Carsten Schwarz What is wrong here?
Dr. Carsten Schwarz Benefits and Strength... (2) Special thematic maps can be tailored as desired to answer a customers question concretely (i.e. distribution of selected material, peat areas...). User-friendly design with modern legend, easy to understand also for non-geologists. Development of an expandable array of products in scale 1:50,000 with the option to upgrade the database with geo- informations about the deeper ground in medium-term. New forms of marketing: products are ready for internet-user, distribution via e-commerce is projected.
Dr. Carsten Schwarz Coordination of working areas with departments „Soil Research“ and „Applied Geology“ Project Management GK50 Selection of preferred working areas per year Evaluation and preparation of selected geological information, based on soil assessment data (i.e. eolian deposits, till etc.) Evaluation of data from peat research projects of BTI (Bremen) Preparation of background information for each sheet (topographic layer, plots of archive material...) Evaluation and preparation of peat-related maps, based on soil assessment data
Dr. Carsten Schwarz Technical processing Map sheet can be ordered by customers via internet ( Map sheet is made available as plot or digital data record for internal and external users / customers Compilation and unification of all peat-related data. Finalization and delimitation of peat areas Presentation and discussion of the draft maps between GK50-management and colleagues from department of soil research for final agreement Finalization of all geological area boundaries, final definition about the content of these areas in coastal / lowland areas Finalization of all geological area boundaries, final definition about the content of these areas in mountain areas
