Strategy For Translating Verbal Phrases Into Expressions: * Identify the operation. * Identify what is known. – that is the constant. * Identify what is unknown – that is the variable. * Write the expression. Tip: For subtraction and division problems, follow the order of the phrase except for “3 less than a number” which is x – 3 NOT 3 – x. The order for addition and multiplication doesn’t matter.
