What is Nationalism? 1.Having love, pride, and patriotism for your nationality. 2. Your nationality is based on language, location, and common ancestry. 3. Nationalism is not an American thing – we don’t have just one nationality. 4. Most nations in Europe formed from uniting nationalities under a government. 2

NATIONALISM 3 -it’s easier to define what it is NOT -It’s NOT American -It’s NOT based on a nation -It’s based on a nationality -Nationality is based on ethnicity -What is your ethnic background?

Collecting colonies based on Nationalism 4 One result of Nationalism was competition Competition on the national level can get ugly The “scramble for Africa” \ is one example. War is another.

Scramble for Africa

Scramble for Africa Why does this matter? Once Africa was all taken up, what’s next?

What is an example? Germany for Germans

Nationalism, leading to hatred and entangling alliances & War 8 1.World War I started because of intense nationalism 2.Each nation thought they were the greatest 3.Each nation thought they were unbeatable 4.Each nation fought with modern technology 5.In the end, the carnage was unimaginable.

M.A.I.N What were the “MAIN” causes of WWI? – M – Militarism – A – Alliances – I – Imperialism – N – Nationalism Nationalism was the cause of the other three Militarism – massive build up of armies Alliances – entangling alliances – no option but to fight if your ally gets in war Imperialism – collecting of lands as a part of empire building

See how big a deal Nationalism is?!

Nationalism also has the power for form nations…

Unification of whole nationalities Italy Germany It also can tear countries apart Austria The Ottoman Empire

Unification of Italy Italy was owned by non-Italians Quest of Italian nationalists was to “kick them all out” “Italy governed by Italians”

Unification of Italy The only section of Italy governed by an Italian was the Island of Sardinia King Victor Emmanuel. He and his Prime Minister, Camillo Cavour did it in just 11 years.

Unification of Germany 1.Germans had been separated into several German nations for more than 100 years. 2.Would be united in just TEN years 3.By Kaiser William I 4.And Chancellor Bismarck

British Imperialism “the sun never set on the British empire” Needed raw materials for factories Needed new markets for their goods Collected colonies around the world

William II Kaiser of Germany Crowned after his grandfather died EXTREME NATIONALIST Wanted to prove German Greatness in the world Became Emperor in 1888 Fired Bismarck in 1890 Started building a navy to challenge the British Started building an army to surpass the French and Russians All three responded by building their forces William I (his granddad)

Militarism Armies grew to support the greatness of their nations Britain wanted a giant navy Russia had the most men France had technology Germany wanted to surpass all of them
