PI must be based in an EU Member State or Associated Country. Research areas: Bottom-up, across all fields of research, on the basis of scientific excellence. Project types: Starting Grants (PI normally 2-7yrs from PhD, up to €2m over 5 yrs) Consolidator Grants (PI normally 7-12yrs from PhD, up to €2.75m over 5 yrs) Advanced Grants (For leading investigators, up to €3.5m over 5 yrs) Synergy Grants (new) (2-4 PIs, up to €15m over 6 yrs) Proof of Concept (new, existing ERC grant holders only) Co-ordination and Support Actions

Advantages Bottom-up Funding for PI and team (usually at one location) No requirement to move Resubmission possible (subject to resubmission rules) Disadvantages Very competitive - only suitable for researchers with an outstanding track record European Research Council Advantages and Disadvantages FP7 – European Research Council

Training and mobility is key In order to assess eligibility (for project or fellowship), it is essential that you consider the following: The minimum or maximum amount of research experience stipulated for the action: Two definitions of researchers: Early Stage Researcher: 0-4 years from obtaining degree that qualified them to embark on a doctorate Experienced Researchers: in possession of a PhD/at least 4 years research experience (FTE) The transnational mobility requirements for the action: usually the researcher must not have been resident in host country for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately before application deadline / date of recruitment or secondment) FP7 People / Marie Curie Actions

Support a research project of 2 – 4 years Contributes to the research costs Supports integration into research career in Europe To provide those taking up stable post with own research budget Should enable transfer of knowledge and building of links with country from which researcher has moved No requirement to have benefited from MC previously Must comply with mobility rule Host commits to employ researcher for at least duration of project €25,000 per year flat rate funding Career Integration Grants FP7 – Marie Curie – Career Integration Grant
