Make connections between Emerson’s Transcendental ideals and my own life. ENTERING THE CLASSROOM Good morning! In order to be prepared for class, please complete the following tasks: Grab your Springboard book from the shelves. Grab a netbook. Take out a writing utensil and your notebook. Please put away your phone.

GOOD MORNING! As a litterateur, I can: Explain the expectations of the upcoming reflective essay. Analyze an excerpt of Emerson’s “Self-Reliance” for comprehension and main ideas. Make connections between Emerson’s Transcendental ideals and my own life. Upcoming HW: Into The Wild chapters 1-3 due Friday Energizer: 1)What would you predict a reflective essay is or has? 2)Look through the white packet with the Get Real Day Seminars. Which look interesting to you?

GET REAL DAY Follow these directions to set your schedule for Get Real Day (they’re the same as on the golden sheet): Log in to your Skyward student account. Click “Arena Scheduling.” Click “Semester 2.” Look through all 6 pages of available courses. Click Add next to the seminar you wish to register in for period 1. Repeat for periods 2 and 3. When you have chosen seminars for all 3 periods, go to the top of the page and click on “view/print schedule” to review your seminar selections. If you are satisfied with your selections, close the window by clicking on the red X. Click “Submit Schedule” at the top of the page to finalize this selection process. Once this button is clicked, you cannot make changes.

EA: REFLECTIVE ESSAY Your next EA is to write a multi- paragraph reflective essay about a significant personal experience that involves the pursuit of happiness and/or transcendental Ideals, being sure to describe the experience and your immediate response to it, as well as to reflect on the significance of the experience. Discuss with your partner: Key words Length Parts – what has to be in this reflective essay? Questions

EMERSON’S SELF-RELIANCE As I read this excerpt from Self-Reliance, circle words and phrases that you would like clarification on. Work with your table partner to summarize each paragraph in a sentence. Write this sentence below the paragraph or in the blue “my notes” section.

WHAT DOES EMERSON, AND BY EXTENSION, TRANSCENDENTALISM, BELIEVE IN? TENETS & BELIEFS BRAINSTORMING IN ORDER TO HAVE A PURPOSE FOR READING INTO THE WILD AND TO BE ABLE TO MAKE CONNECTIONS TO EVENTS IN OUR LIVES

GIVE ONE, GET ONE Find three ideas in Emerson’s Self-Reliance that particularly appeal to you. These could be a phrase, a sentence, or a couple of sentences. Write each of these ideas on a separate card. Be prepared to read the quote and share why you chose it. Have a conversation with someone in class about the quote you picked, and listen to why they chose the quote they picked. Swap cards. Do this two more times, until you have a three new cards. Then, go ahead and return to your seat.

REFLECTIVE WRITING, ROUND ONE Choose 1-3 sentences from Emerson’s Self-Reliance excerpt that particular resonate with you. Write a personal response to these lines, reflecting on how they compare to your own beliefs, thoughts, feelings, and/or experiences. Guidelines: Minimum of 8 sentences Does not have to be a paragraph Include the quote with a proper lead in Use the word “I” Make connections between your life and the quote
