Migrant Workers Then & Now

As a Review…  Migrant workers were common during the Great Depression because jobs were scarce and men had to travel from ranch to ranch to support their families.  This is hard, backbreaking labor. Who would you consider the present day “migrant worker?”

The Migrant Experience Then

…and now (Stephen Colbert Interview)

Crossover Practice  Don’t be scared! It’s basically just a double short answer.  Contrasting? Try this pattern - Thesis, evidence, analysis, evidence, analysis  Comparing? Try this pattern - thesis, evidence, evidence, analysis, analysis

Crossover Sample Question  How does the migrant experience today compare to that of the Great Depression? Use quotes from both “The Migrant Experience” and Stephen Colbert’s plea to Congress to support your answer.

Stephen Colbert Quotes  “They seemed busy with beans and corn.”  “I tried to get them to sing field songs, but they didn’t have any.”  “Americans don’t want to take these types of jobs.”  “I like talking about people who don’t have any power.”  “Some of the most least powerful people are migrant workers who do our work and don’t get any rights as a result.”  “We invite them to come here, and at the same time, ask them to leave.”
