The correct answer is choice (D) trip. "Excursion" is another word for trip. Choice (A) is incorrect because an excursion is a journey rather than a meeting. Choice (B) is incorrect because an excursion is not a specific location like a mountaintop is. Choice (C) is incorrect because an excursion is not something specific like a trail.

Standard/I can ELAGSE7RL2: Determine a theme and/or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. ELAGSE7RL10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. ELAGSE7RL3: Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how settings shape the characters or plot). I can show what I know on the Chapter 4 – Chapter 5 Quiz!

Hook Review the Abstract for Chapter4 – Chapter 5 to jog the students’ memories Chapter 4 - Chapter 5 Abstract *Chapter 4: Slakk is caught retrieving the brush from the showers by Likkarn, who, when smoking blisterweed, is uncontrollably violent. * Slakk betrays Jakkin to Likkarn about the brush, and Likkarn goes to beat Jakkin. * Blood Brother becomes agitated while sensing Likkarn's mood and becomes violent as Likkarn beats Jakkin unconscious. * Blood Brother escapes and opens an old wound, the blood spraying all over the unconscious Jakkin and burning him. * Likkarn gets a stun gun and sets it to kill instead of stun and kills Blood Brother out of anger that the dragon had caused Likkarn to lose money in the last fight. * Chapter 5: Jakkin awakens in the hospital, being cared for by Akki. * Jakkin, not knowing he's been in the hospital for a week, attempts to get up and go to the nurseries to steal the egg he wants, but he reopens a wound and passes out. * Akki informs him of the day and that the eggs have hatched and Jakkin cries in frustration. * Likkarn and Sarkkhan have a tremendous fight about Likkarn killing Blood Brother and Sarkkhan takes Likkarn's gold and demotes Likkarn to a stall boy. * Jakkin knows he has missed his chance for an egg.

Mini-Lesson Abstracts Review/Questions Extension: Students will make 3 multiple choice questions about the Ch. 4- Ch.5 that they think will be on their test. Trade with a partner and answer.

Work Session Guided Reading Questions Chapter 5: 1. Where does Jakkin awaken at the opening of Chapter Five? Who is there when Jakkin awakes? Why is Jakkin anxious to be in the place where he wakes? 2. What time of day is it when Jakkin wakes? 3. What does Jakkin accidentally do? 4. What does Sarkkhan do to Likkarn? 5. Why does Jakkin start crying? 6. What does Sarkkhan accuse Likkarn of doing? 7. How does the hatching go?

Work Session Quiz 2 When done with quiz: Write a short training manual on how to train a dragon using the information you learned in Dragon's Blood so far. (take this up and allow students to work on it at various times throughout the reading of the novel)

Closing Share some student examples of the dragon training manual.

Bellwork March 8,2016 Copy and answer.

The correct answer is choice (B) down. This is the only word in the sentences that explains the meaning of "descent." Choices (A) and (C) are incorrect because a descent is not an announcement or a plan. Choice (D) is incorrect because "descent" does not relate to convincing.

Standard/I can ELAGSE7RI6: Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author distinguishes his or her position from that of others. I can begin to write a constructed response using two passages.

Hook-

Mini-Lesson Author’s Perspective Level up l l Students will complete level-up check points. Students will complete a circle map as a form of note taking over the level up tutorial.

Work Session Read the question and do the first step in RACES: Restate the Question. QUESTION: Based on the information in both passages, how do the authors MOST LIKELY feel about the history of these unusual inventions? Read the passages: “Accidental Genius” & “How Bizarre” INSERT: Place a star next to anything that may reveal how the author MOST LIKELY feels about the history of the inventions.

Closing Compare INSERT with a partner and discuss.

Bellwork March 9,2016 Copy and answer. Write down the steps for RACES and explain how you can complete each step.

Standard/I can ELAGSE7RI6: Determine an author’s point of view or purpose in a text and analyze how the author distinguishes his or her position from that of others. I can write a constructed response over an assigned topic.

Hook Point of View

Mini-Lesson Review RACES. Reflection – How can you effectively complete each step of RACES? What will you need to do specifically for each step? Share examples of the R in RACES from yesterday.

ELA Constructed Response: Noteworthy Trends Students responding to items that require comparing the viewpoints/main ideas of two authors or passages may only focus on explaining the viewpoint/main idea of one of the authors or passages. Students may provide a basic answer to the prompt without providing supporting details from the passage(s). Students may provide details from the passage(s) without addressing the question in the prompt.

Work Session Write constructed response for the question: Based on the information in both passages, how do the authors MOST LIKELY feel about the history of these unusual inventions? After writing your constructed response, we will view the student samples from the Georgia Milestones as a baseline. Use the Scoring Guideline (rubric), students will complete a self- assessment of their constructed response. On the next slides you will find the scoring guideline (rubric) and student samples for comparison.

Closing Share student responses and discuss.

Bellwork March 10,2016 Copy and answer.

The correct answer is D because the order is logical and it correctly combines a dependent clause with an independent clause (the comma is placed after the dependent clause because it comes first).

Standard/I can ELAGSE7RL3: Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact. I can identify the genre type of the novel we are reading and use story elements to plot a story of my own with a similar genre.

Hook Genre

Mini-Lesson Genre PPT Review Ch. 5 Read Ch. 6

Work Session Guided Reading Questions: 1. Who is Kkarina? 2. What does Jakkin eat after getting out of the hospital? 3. What is Kkarina no longer wearing? 4. Where did Kkarina work to earn money to buy her freedom?

Closing In groups have students come up with a plot for a fantasy novel similar to Dragon's Blood.

Bellwork March 11,2016 Copy and answer.

The correct answer is D because it is off topic since it addresses the paintings of Van Gogh’s friend.

Standard/I can ELAGSE7RL2: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze it’s development over the course of the text.

Hook Themes

Mini-Lesson What is power? How would you define it? Likkarn controls the boys with fear and pain. He maintains his power through manipulation and intimidation. How can we form a theme statement about power that could apply to other pieces of writing or life situations beyond “Dragon’s Blood?”

Work Session Guided Reading Questions: 1. Where does Sarkkhan leave Likkarn? 2. What does Jakkin see as he leaves the bondhouse? Why does Jakkin not want to tell anyone about what he saw? 3. Who does Jakkin calm as he looks in on the hatchlings? 4. What words do good trainers use when addressing dragons? 5. How many hatchlings does Heat O' Mine have? What does Jakkin find in Heat O' Mine's hatchling area? What will happen to any imperfect hatchling? 6. What is sitting on Heat O' Mine's head? What does Jakkin realize about what is on Heat O' Mine's head? 7. What does Jakkin see when he looks in a hatchling's eyes? 8. Where does Jakkin go in the dark?

Closing In groups have students make a list of situations in which people seem powerless and ways in which a person can respond to those situations with power. Groups may share their ideas with the class.
