Brief History of Nuclear Medicine in Bangladesh The first nuclear medicine center of the country was established in 1962 in Dhaka Medical College under the then PAEC. In 1970 two more Centres were established, one in Chittagong & one in Rajshahi. By 1980 we had centres in Dinajpur, Sylhet & the Institute of NM in IPGMR, Dhaka. In 1980s, installation of nuclear medicine gamma cameras & computers. First computerized gamma camera was established in INM in First single head SPECT installed in 1995 First double head SPECT installed in 2003 First SPECT-CT installed in 2008 First PET-CT installed in 2010 There are 15 different NM establishments under the umbrella of BAEC along with seven other establishments.

Manpower At present there are about 90 nuclear medicine physicians, 20 medical physicists, 10 radiochemists and 150 technologists. The nuclear medicine physicians and physicists are mainly trained from abroad. A number of nuclear medicine physicians & physicists are currently completing PhD. Isotope and Radiopharmaceuticals BAEC has a research reactor. It produces Tc-99m and I Sometimes we need to import. The kits are mainly imported. Cyclotron produces F-18

“Promoting and Accelerating Nuclear SPECT/PET Imaging Technologies in the Region” Outcome: The levels of nuclear imaging involving SPECT and PET and its application capabilities will be enhanced in the country. Output: Will contribute to the progress of clinical sciences including management of patients with oncologic and neurologic disorders. Will facilitate nuclear imaging-related sciences including radiochemistry and medical physics, will augment basic science and technology for clinical applications and maximize the use of imaging devices and facilities. This project will provide with opportunities to widen boundaries of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging. Will enrich basic and applied science capabilities and thus will make economic and social profits in the long run. This will help reduce total costs of health care services.

Recommendations: I would like to recommend for arranging the 2013 NPC Annual Review Meeting in Bangladesh alongside a daylong seminar. This will be a great opportunity for the local participants to learn directly from the foreign experts. Vice-versa this will also create a scope for the experts from the developed countries to have a first hand impression of the problems in a developing country.
