A Raisin in the Sun Anticipation Guide Things to Consider Before You Read

Instructions Copy the number on your paper. Next to each number, state whether you agree or disagree with the statement on the slide. Give a 3-4 sentence paragraph that explains your choice. You will be given about 3-5 minutes for each response.

Statements 1. It is the man’s responsibility to provide monetarily for the family. 2. If a man is unable to provide monetarily for his family that makes him less of a man.

3. It is the woman’s responsibility to care for the children and keep the home in order (cooking, cleaning, etc.). 4. Women should not aspire to be in high power, high stress careers, such as becoming a doctor or lawyer.

5. Gender roles are dictated by society and we have no control over them. 6. We should accept our roles (gender, race, and socioeconomic) as society dictates and not try to change them even if we are unhappy.

7. In order for society to function, there has to be a “food chain”: some people at the top, some in the middle and some at the bottom. 8. If a ship sinks and there is one lifeboat with 15 seats, but there are 30 people aboard the ship and only food for 10, you still attempt to save everyone.
