Creating A Cool Cover by Arizona art teacher Leanne Smith with Mary Erickson, Ph.D. Cars and Guitars Tempe Center for the Arts July 10-Oct. 16, 2010

Select music that you believe is cool and make a CD cover that will persuade other students to buy it. We can design a cool cover using the simple children’s song, “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”

Can you remember the song? Sing it if you can. List words that come to your mind as you listen to the music.

What colors do you see as you listen to the music?

What images come to your mind as you listen to the music?

Review the type of balance your teacher asked you to use.

Here is an example cover for “Mary had a Little Lamb.” It has symmetrical balance.

These are other cool covers made by high school students. Each one has bilateral symmetry.

These covers use quadrilateral symmetry. Like all symmetrical designs the focal point of each is in the center.

These covers use radial symmetry. All of these covers use radial symmetry. Which artist adjusted it to create more interest?

These covers are asymmetrical. The focal point of each is not in the center.

Your cover illustration should: have a square format. use your assigned type of balance. use colors you chose. include a picture of yourself. include at least three other picture elements. include a short title. You may repeat any of the elements of your design as many times as you need to make your design successful. Now it’s your turn to create your own “cool cover.”

Thank you to the following: Digital photography students from Leanne Smith’s classes at McClintock High School in Tempe, Ariz. Fender ® Musical Instruments Images of Fender guitars used in this project include: Avril Levine Telecaster ®, James Burton St Telecaster ®, Eric Clapton Stratocaster ® and Stevie Ray Vaughn Stratocaster ®. Use of these images was strictly for educational purposes.
