 As you read chapter 16 (titled social psychology, pg ), you need to create at least 75, so about 2 for each page, questions about anything you find to be of real importance in the reading.  You also have to write in the answers to those questions.  I would write down the answers right away, but that’s up to you.  Think about the questions I asked you on the previous study guides and mirror them.  Don’t just focus on the bolded terms.  You will have today, Tuesday when we get back from spring break, and Monday, April 4 th (the week of this social psychology unit test) to work on this in class. What you don’t finish you will have to do outside of class.  Keep in mind, you will be able to use this made-by- you study guide on the day of the quiz (Friday, April 5 th ). The quiz will focus on anything from the Perceiving Others (Module 16.1) to Relating to Others (Module 16.2) readings.  This is due the day of the social psychology unit test, Friday, April 8 th !

Ordering them tomorrow right after school!!! Remember, you will receive 5 raffle tickets if you register by class time tomorrow! Our very last unit test on social psychology- Friday, April 8 th ! No FRQ on this one! Study guide, graphic organizer (for extra credit), and flashcards due the day of the test! Psychologist chart will be TURNED IN FOR CREDIT that day, too! Goal(s): Be able to explain and differentiate among different attribution types. 1)Pick up the attribution guided notes. 2)Work on the bell work. To Do As You Walk In: Today’s Lesson: 1)Attribution Theory Notes, Videos, Questionnaires.

ATTRIBUTION THEORY: We make guesses, or “attributions,” about the causes of people’s behavior. We often make mistakes because of the different biases we have.

Attribution Dispositional (about the person) Internal! Situational (outside of the person) Stable (always) Unstable (can change) Stable (always) Unstable (can change) Specific (this situation) Global (entire life) I failed the test because… I’m stupid I’m no good at taking tests I was in a bad mood that day. I procrastinated.Life is unfair The teacher hates me The weather was too nice. The exam was too hard Which attribution is most likely to be made by someone who is depressed? A BC DE

Attribution Dispositional (about the person) Situational (outside of the person) Stable (always) Unstable (can change) Stable (always) Unstable (can change) Specific (this situation) Global (entire life) I aced the test because… I’m great at taking tests. AB C DE A The exam was really easy. E I’m super smart. C Good people get good things.

Imagine you’re driving down the highway and a car speeds past you, then quickly moves into your lane, cutting you off. 1. Which statement most closely matches your first response? reckless driver! B.The driver must be having a hard day. 2. Imagine you’re checking out at a grocery store. The cashier smiles at you and greets you warmly Which statement most closely matches your first response? A.The cashier is a very friendly person! B.The cashier is just doing what a cashier is supposed to do.

Notes are in the wrong order…

Fundamental Attribution Error (FAE) Suggests that we tend to make attributions about causes of behavior being internal & not external. In other words, personal, not based on the situation /the environment that person is in at the time. We often believe that someone does something because of who he/she is, not because of the situation. Ex. Interview- someone walks in late You think it is because they are a person who is always late, who doesn’t care about making people wait, who is selfish, etc.

Actor-Observer Bias: If we are watching someone else do something, we believe their behavior is internally motivated. If we are doing something, we believe our behavior is due to external causes. Ex. Your date is late to a movie. You believe their behavior is due to the fact that they are internally inconsiderate. You are late to a movie. You believe your behavior is due to the fact that there was traffic.

Instructions: Number your notes 1-15.

1.Leadership ability 2.Athletic ability 3.Ability to get along with others 4.Tolerance 5.Energy level 6.Helpfulness 7.Responsibility A.Well above average B.Above average C.Average D.Below average E.Well below average Compared with other students of the same class level and sex as yourself, how would you rate yourself on the following characteristics? 8. Creativeness 9. Patience 10. Trustworthiness 11. Sincerity 12. Thoughtfulness 13. Cooperativeness 14. Reasonableness 15. Intelligence

Self-Serving Bias: Serves us, NOT other people! We attribute causes of behavior to external causes if we fail & internal causes if we succeed. Our Behavior - it’s because of us if we SUCCEED. Our Behavior - it’s EXTERNAL if we FAIL. Ex. If I get an A, it’s because I paid attention in class and studied well. If I get an F, it’s because the teacher is horrible at what he/she does.

Discuss the explanations that are often given for individuals who receive government aid. How does this fit into the fundamental attribution error? Thought of the Day
