Slide 1 of 5 Confidential Yellow C13 Oil Test Engine Cylinder Liner Quality Validation 1Y4107 Presented at the 11Jan2005 C13 Task Force Meeting in San Antonio, TX C Dutart

Slide 2 of 5 Confidential Yellow SCOTE liner quality validation Cat 3L-0412 Inspection Requirements Based on industry experience 100% inspection of critical features –Bore –Pilots –Seal groove –Flange –Surface texture Optical inspection of bore for surface voids

Slide 3 of 5 Confidential Yellow C13 OTE Liner Quality Validation Problems: Liner source change pending –Needed 1500 oil test liners in stock by Dec 2004 Inspections are bottleneck –Not able to keep up with demand C13 PRL kit cost is high –But can manage liner cost directly (vs pistons/rings) Optical inspection process invalid for C13 –Therefore can’t establish basis for eddy current limits

Slide 4 of 5 Confidential Yellow Take advantage of factory SPC –Historical quality of each critical feature known –Accept all features having perfect record –100% inspect known weaknesses –100% inspect bore diameter and roundness Supplemental random inspections –100% pass rate achieved Qualitative optical inspection of 5 liners –Comparable to or better than 1N plateau hone liner C13 Quality Validation Approach

Slide 5 of 5 Confidential Yellow C13 OTE Liner Conclusions High confidence in C13 liner quality 1500 liners in stock - 5 year supply Low cost Cat oil test liner
