 2008 Summer Olympics Beijing By: Chris Giannantoni

Beijing Information  Beijing is located in the northern part of China.  Sometimes Romanized as Peking.  One of the most populated cities in China.  It is home to the headquarters of most of Chinas Largest state-owned companies, and is a major hub for the national highway, expressway, railway, and high-speed rail networks.  The Beijing capital International airport is the second is the second busiest in the world.

How Beijing Prepared  When Beijing was announced to host the 2008 Summer Olympics, people were skeptical. The amount of people and especially pollution was a big question about Beijing hosting the Olympics.  Beijing and China wanted to show the world that the country's rapid economic growth and modernization to the rest of the world.  Beijing all in all spent about 6 years to fully prepare for the Olympics to be held there.

Beijing Prepared Cont.  Hosting the Olympics was supposed to be a chance for China's leaders to showcase the country's rapid economic growth and modernization to the rest of the world.  The city nearly renovated almost every building and added new one while also making there airport bigger as well.  The city has reportedly spent as much as $16 billion to deliver a "green Olympics”  Official government spending for the construction bonanza was nearly $40 billion.

Business Effects  Major Business effects occurred in the renovation parts leading up to the 2008 Olympics. Beijing and China spent nearly 40 billion preparing for the games. Many business were on hold due to pollution and others gained money from the renovations. Beijing was literary re-built from the ground up.

Business Effects Cont.  The amount of economic growth from the 2008 games in Beijing was astounding. It is actually reported that it has risen up over 2 percent each year since renovations were made. Even after all the money that was spent for renovations.  Another big factor is marketing. The amount of money spent when the Olympics were nearly about to start risen to 250 million. Annually it was about 12 billion leading up to  To compare that the U.S. usually spends about 300 million a year annually.

Surrounding Countries/Foreign Countries  Surrounding Countries  Some of the surrounding countries did receive some types of benefits from the games.  It ranges from more tourists and tax revenues, to renovations of buildings as well.  Foreign Countries  The relay, meant to symbolize China’s embrace of Olympic ideals, was marred by protests in Greece, Great Britain, France, the United States, and elsewhere against China’s policies in Tibet and the Sudanese region of Darfur and China’s human rights and environmental policies in general.

Conclusion  There are many things that take place as far as the Olympics go, but I don’t think anyone had it harder that Beijing.  Their own acts put them in a whole and they had to spend a lot of money to get out of it.  They did get positives in the long run from hosting the Olympics but it did take time.  The preparation and business effects were both negative and positive in ways.
