Discipleship Problem – Disciples are learners/think through Who is Jesus? – Both Lord and Christ Come and see! – Get up and observe what God is doing Deny yourself, daily pick up your cross – Aware only of Christ and no longer self Remain – Not the fruit, not the pruning – What matters is remaining Now what?

1 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer--at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!" 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. 6 Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."

7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. 9 When all the people saw him walking and praising God, 10 they recognized him as the same man who used to sit begging at the temple gate called Beautiful, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. 11 While the beggar held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon's Colonnade.

12 When Peter saw this, he said to them: "Men of Israel, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk? 13 The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus. You handed him over to be killed, and you disowned him before Pilate, though he had decided to let him go. 14 You disowned the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a murderer be released to you. 15 You killed the author of life, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses of this. 16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see.

1 One day Peter and John were going up to the temple at the time of prayer--at three in the afternoon. 2 Now a man crippled from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts. “One day” – not a particular day. P&J were doing what they normally do. They were Jewish, so they do Jewish stuff What do you do? What do you like to do? Go do it with a recognition of God’s grace in your life- joy. While P&J are doing what they normally do, they encounter someone. P&J TOGETHER

3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for money. 4 Peter looked straight at him, as did John. Then Peter said, "Look at us!" 5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them. Need is acknowledged. P&J look at him. (1:10) – This is something more than noticing. This is intent looking and recognition. Perceive -Connection is made. Be very careful about discipling where you have no connection! Expectation – money? Something else? We do know that Peter will help direct how the lame man and the crowd interpret events.

6 Then Peter said, "Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk. 7 Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. 8 He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. Peter has no more power than he has silver or gold. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Luke is a Dr. He wants you to know that something unique has happened. Joy – chara/ grace – charis “The awareness of grace.”

When you make disciples and are successful, there is a dangerous trap. People will hold on to YOU. People will come running to YOU. Remain, Die to self, Take up your cross

Know your audience! Peter’s appeal is made using Jewish history If we try to make disciples in places or with people we don’t know anything about, we will be swimming upstream Witness – martyr= eye- or ear-witness “Come and See!” John 15:26-16:4 – Spirit will witness and we are to witness. Will be difficult

16 By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see. “5 So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them.” Peter gives meaning to expectation. Faith= Come and see, Act Complete Healing – holokleria- “This word speaks of an unimpaired condition of the body, in which all its members are healthy and fit for use.” FOR USE!!!

Joy – Used in NT to talk about those who have been discipled, giving joy to those who did the discipling. 2 Cor. 2:3 Phil 2:2 1 Thess 2:20 2 Tim 1:4 1 John 1:3-4 Someone has done something so that you can have life! You can’t be a disciple if you are not making disciples. You are also simply missing out on “zoe.”
