Isaiah 13

Isaiah 13:1 “Isaiah son of Amoz received this message concerning the destruction of Babylon”

NationChapter(s) in Isaiah Babylon: 13:1-14; 21:1-10 Assyria: 14:24-27 Philistia: 14:28-32 Moab: 15:1-16:14 Syria/Damascus: 17:1-6 Cush/ Ethiopia: 18:1-7 Egypt: 19:1-25 Edom: 21:11-12; 34:5-17 Arabia/Kedar: 21:13-17 Tyre/Sidon:23:1-18

Isaiah 13:1-8, “Isaiah son of Amoz received this message concerning the destruction of Babylon: “Raise a signal flag on a bare hilltop. Call up an army against Babylon. Wave your hand to encourage them as they march into the palaces of the high and mighty.” ‎

“I, the LORD, have dedicated these soldiers for this task. Yes, I have called mighty warriors to express my anger, and they will rejoice when I am exalted.” Hear the noise on the mountains! Listen, as the vast armies march! It is the noise and shouting of many nations.

“The LORD of Heaven’s Armies has called this army together. They come from distant countries, from beyond the farthest horizons. They are the LORD’s weapons to carry out His anger. With them He will destroy the whole land.” ‎

“Scream in terror, for the day of the LORD has arrived— the time for the Almighty to destroy. Every arm is paralyzed with fear. Every heart melts, and people are terrified. Pangs of anguish grip them, like those of a woman in labor.”

“They look helplessly at one another, their faces aflame with fear.”

“They will be amazed at one another: When Babylon fell suddenly by a clever, surprise attack by Cyrus, the king of Persia, the citizens of the city were completely shocked” (Daniel 5 & 10).”

Isaiah13:9-13 “For see, the day of the L ORD is coming— the terrible day of his fury and fierce anger. The land will be made desolate, and all the sinners destroyed with it. 10 The heavens will be black above them; the stars will give no light.

The sun will be dark when it rises, and the moon will provide no light. “I, the L ORD, will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their sin. I will crush the arrogance of the proud and humble the pride of the mighty. 12 I will make people scarcer than gold—

-more rare than the fine gold of Ophir. 13 For I will shake the heavens. The earth will move from its place when the L ORD of Heaven’s Armies displays His wrath in the day of his fierce anger.”

The day of the LORD comes: Isaiah speaks in the “prophetic tense,” having in mind both a near fulfillment, the day of judgment against the Babylonian Empire, and a far or ultimate fulfillment, the final day of judgment at the second coming of Jesus.

“It is as if today is man’s day, but the LORD’s day is coming!!” David Guzik

Isaiah 13:17 “Look, I will stir up the Medes against Babylon. They cannot be tempted by silver or bribed with gold.”

Isaiah 13:19 “Babylon, the most glorious of kingdoms, the flower of Chaldean pride, will be devastated like Sodom and Gomorrah when God destroyed them.”

“The city of Babylon was completely destroyed in 689 B.C. by Sennacherib and the Assyrian army, but it was rebuilt by Sennacherib’s son. In 539 B.C., Darius the Mede captured the city (Dan. 5:31), but he did not destroy it. In the centuries that followed,

“…Babylon had its ‘shining moments,’ but after the death of its last great Greek conqueror, Alexander the Great, the city declined and soon was no more. Isaiah’s prophecy was fulfilled, for the city was not rebuilt.” Warren W iersbe

Isaiah 13:22b “…Babylon’s days are numbered; its time of destruction will soon arrive.”

Isaiah 14:1-2a “But the LORD will have mercy on the descendants of Jacob. He will choose Israel as His special people once again. He will bring them back to settle once again in their own land.”

“And people from many different nations will come and join them there and unite with the people of Israel. ‎ 2 The nations of the world will help the people of Israel to return, and those who come to live in the LORD’s land will serve them…”

“This promise had a measure of fulfillment when Israel was brought back from Babylon; and still it is true that, when God’s people come to their worst, there is always something better before them.

On the other hand, it is equally sure that, when sinners come to their best, there is always something terrible awaiting them.” C. H. Spurgeon

Declaration of Israel's Independence, 1948 “We appeal to the United Nations to assist the Jewish people in the building of its State and to admit Israel into the family of nations. In the midst of wanton aggression, we yet call upon the Arab inhabitants of the State of Israel to return to the ways of peace

and play their part in the development of the State, with full and equal citizenship and due representation in its bodies and institutions – provisional or permanent. We offer peace and unity to all the neighboring states and their peoples, and invite them to

cooperate with the independent Jewish nation for the common good of all. Our call goes out the Jewish people all over the world to rally to our side in the task of immigration and development and to stand by us in the great struggle for the fulfillment of the dream of generations --

the redemption of Israel. With trust in Almighty God, we set our hand to this Declaration, at this Session of the Provisional State Council, in the city of Tel Aviv, on this Sabbath eve, the fifth of Iyar, 5708, the fourteenth day of May, 1948.”
