GRAND CANYON COUNCILGRAND CANYON COUNCIL 2015 Life to Eagle Responsibility – The Scout is responsible for planning, directing and following through to the projects successful completion. Restrictions There are no required minimum hours for a project. No one may tell you how many hours must be spent on it. Routine labor is not normally appropriate for a project. This might be defined as a job or service you may provide as part of your daily life, or a routine maintenance job normally done by the beneficiary (for example, pulling weeds on the football field at your school). Keep in mind that what’s routine for an adult might be new to a boy.

GRAND CANYON COUNCILGRAND CANYON COUNCIL 2015 Life to Eagle While projects may not be of a commercial nature or for a business, this is not meant to disallow work for community institutions, such as museums and service agencies (like homes for the elderly, for example), that would otherwise be acceptable. Some aspect of a business operation provided as a community service may also be considered—for example, a park open to the public that happens to be owned by a business. No more than one Eagle Scout candidate may receive credit for working on the same Eagle Scout service project.

GRAND CANYON COUNCILGRAND CANYON COUNCIL 2015 Life to Eagle Projects may not be performed for the Boy Scouts of America, or its councils, districts, units, or properties. A project may not be an effort that primarily collects money, even for a worthy charity. Fundraising is permitted only for securing materials and facilitating a project, and it may need to be approved by your council. See “Eagle Scout Service Project Fundraising Application” in the workbook.

GRAND CANYON COUNCILGRAND CANYON COUNCIL 2015 Life to Eagle The Fundraising Application (Pages 17–18) If your fundraising effort involves contributions only from the beneficiary of your project or you, your parents or relatives, your unit or its chartered organization, or parents or members in your unit, submitting the fundraising application is not necessary. If less than $500 is being raised, the Fundraising Application is not required. If you will be obtaining money or materials from any other sources, you must submit a completed application to your district project approver unless you are seeking cash donations exceeding $ from individual businesses, which must be approved by the local council service center.

Meet with the benefiting group and complete the Eagle Scout Service Project in the workbook. Once they accept your proposal, have the benefiting group representative sign and date the Beneficiary Approval block. Present your completed proposal to your Unit Leader and Unit committee representative for approval and obtain their approval signatures on the same page.

That District person will review the project to assure it meets all National standards and tell you either that it is approved or why it cannot be and what must be done be done make it approvable. – YOUR PROJECT CANNOT BE STARTED WITHOUT DISTRICT APPROVAL.

GRAND CANYON COUNCILGRAND CANYON COUNCIL 2015 Life to Eagle Verifying Eagle Application – In Grand Canyon Council all completed Eagle Packets are submitted to a designated District Eagle Requirements Verifier who will make sure all the information submitted meets the requirements for Eagle Scout Rank. Your Advancement Chairperson or your Unit Leader can help you with this step. – Any errors or deficiencies found during this process must be corrected prior to certification. It’s best to include photo copies of all merit badge and rank advancement cards in your packet. – When the District Verification step is complete, the Scout will be notified that the Eagle Packet can be picked up. The packet will contain instructions for scheduling his Eagle Scout Board of Review.

GRAND CANYON COUNCILGRAND CANYON COUNCIL 2015 Life to Eagle Board Of Review In many districts the District Certifier will inform the Scout when the next Eagle BOR will meet or schedule a BOR for the Eagle Candidate and provide contact information if necessary. – In some districts the boy or his Scoutmaster will contact the District Advancement Chair or District Eagle Board Coordinator to set up his Board of review. – Many districts hold regularly scheduled Eagle Boards of Review, some hold them as required.

GRAND CANYON COUNCILGRAND CANYON COUNCIL 2015 Life to Eagle Board of Review Who Can Sit on the Eagle Board of Review ? – At least three but not more than six members – The District Advancement Chair or Designate – Any one who understands Scouting – Scoutmaster (non-voting observer) – Who Cannot Sit On the Eagle Board of Review? – Members of family – Relatives How long should the Eagle Board Take – Approximately 30 minutes, no more than 45.

GRAND CANYON COUNCILGRAND CANYON COUNCIL 2015 Life to Eagle Eagle Board Of Review – The review members have to be unanimous to recommend the Eagle Candidate to National for approval. – Candidate is not an Eagle Scout until National approves the application. Occasionally they reject it. Post Board Of Review Paperwork – The board members will sign and date the Eagle Application form, date the Grand Canyon Council Check Sheet if necessary; and in some districts, complete a District Eagle Board of Review form.

Scout is to keep: – Remainder of Eagle Packet Processing –The District Eagle Board of Review Coordinator or a responsible Scouter designated by that body, must ensure that the Eagle Scout Rank Application, the GCC Checklist sheet, and the IA Member Summary Report (if provided), are sent or delivered to the Council Eagle Services Office promptly.

The Eagle Services Office will submit the Eagle Application electronically (this also performs a final error check) to the BSA National office. It takes about six weeks to receive word from National if Eagle Rank is approved or not. Unless other arrangements have been made, the Eagle Certificate will be mailed to the Scout’s home address listed on the Eagle Application in about a month
