Presentation transcript:

Chlamydia Caused by bacterial infection Most seen STD in U.S. (Illinois has high infection rate) 3 million new cases each year Males experience burning during urination and unusual discharge 3-4 weeks after exposure Females may not experience symptoms but may include same symptoms as males Diagnosed through a lab test Treated with antibiotics (penicillin) Infertility may occur if left untreated

Gonorrhea Bacterial infection About 2 million new cases each year Body does not build immunity to gonorrhea Males experience painful urination or discharge 3-8 days after infection (symptoms may go away but infection still exists Females may not experience symptoms but may include painful urination, discharge, or irregular menstruation Treated with antibiotics If left untreated, it can spread through the body through the blood creating sores on the skin

Syphilis Also caused by bacteria Attacks many different parts of the body If left untreated, can damage heart, liver, kidneys, and central nervous system Increases the risk of transmitting and acquiring HIV Blood test used to diagnose Penicillin and other antibiotics used to treat No immunity

Syphilis First Stage: A chancre (painless sore) appears and lasts for a couple of weeks then goes away Secondary stage: Circulates through the blood and causes a non-itching rash to form Third Stage: (2 or more years from infection) Bacteria attack vital organs (sores appear, flu like symptoms) Neurosyphilis stage: (10-30 years) person loses coordinated movement and may experience blindness and mental illness Congenital syphilis: passed on from the mother

Herpes Caused by a virus Creates painful itching sores (2-20 days after infection) Lasts for about 3 weeks then goes away Can be contagious before blisters appear No cure but there is medical treatment CDC reports 1 in 7 people have been infected

HPV (Genital Warts) Close to 100 types but only 30 can be transmitted sexually Most people do not show any symptoms When symptoms do occur, genital warts form Women can get a pap test, men need medical examination of genital warts There is no cure.)

HIV & AIDS Acquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome HIV attacks the immune system (mostly the T-Cells) Transmission occurs through exchange of bodily fluid (vaginal fluid, semen, breast milk, and blood) IV drug use and sexual intercourse are usually the ways it is transmitted.

HIV & AIDS Test for HIV antibodies in blood ELISA test can provide false readings if patient has other diseases like hemophelia and hepatitis. Western blot test: more accurate but also more expensive AIDS occurs when a person develops infections, lower T-Cell count(below 200), and a positive test for HIV antibodies
