TRUMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL Presented by Counsilman ▪ Hunsaker Facility Audit

Audit Overview Perform inspection of pool and mechanical systems to identify items that are not: –operating as designed –meeting current state code –meeting current industry standard Provide opinion of probable cost

Summary - Pool Description Original construction in lane, 25-yard lap pool Pool shut down for several years Primarily use: –Swim team training (no diving) –Water aerobics –Swim lessons

Summary - Pool Deficiencies Multiple areas of the tile finish were found to be chipped or cracked. Areas of missing tile have exposed a loose substrate. The gutter system drains to waste, and doubles as the drain system for the pool deck. A surge tank is not provided. The main drain cover is not VGB compliant. The underwater lights are not functional. The depth markings and warning signs do not meet the administrative code requirements. ADA access is not provided. The pool mechanical system is in need of a full renovation including: –Piping and valves –Recirculation pump and motor –Filtration system –Chemical treatment system –Fresh water make-up system –Pool heating

Pool Characteristics Length75’-2” Width42’-1” Surface Area3,163 square feet Perimeter240’-4” LanesSix lanes, 7’-6” wide Water Depth3’-6” to 9’-11” Pool Volume149,880 gallons Flow RateUnknown TurnoverUnknown

Pool Conditions Structure and finish Perimeter gutter Main drains Inlets Ingress and Egress Pool Markings

Structure and Finish 52 year old concrete shell Some cracks on back-side Crack / chipped tiles

Perimeter Gutter Gutters were designed to drain to the sanitary sewer Current administrative code and industry standard is to utilize a surge tank connected to the overflow gutters Stainless steel gutter could be utilized as a replacement for the existing gutter.

Main Drains and Inlets Single 8’ x 1’ main drain Bronze wall inlets Return inlets will be integral with the recommended gutter system, –the existing inlets will not be needed.

Virginia Graeme Baker VGB Act requires replacement of drain covers Dome shaped covers required Existing sumps do not need replacement

Ingress and Egress Grab rails and recessed steps –all four corners of the pool The pool is not ADA accessible

Pool Markings Horizontal depth markings are provided in black 1” x 1” tiles. Vertical depth markings have been painted on the natatorium walls. Markings indicating “SHALLOW END” and “DEEP END” are also provided. Neither “No Diving” markings nor international “No Diving” symbols are provided. The existing depth markings and warning signs do not meet the code requirements.

Mechanical System Piping and Valves Pump and Motor Filtration Chemical Controller Chemical Treatment Make-Up Water Pool Heating Mechanical Room

Mechanical System A full renovation of the mechanical equipment is recommended for this facility, including filtration system. Fiberglass high rate pressure sand filter tanks on site Two filters 60” long and 36” around Total filtration area of 34.6 square feet Recirculation rate of 420 gpm, –filtration rate through each filter will be gpm/ft 2, which is well below the industry standard maximum rate of 15.0 gpm/ft 2. Require more backwash capacity that the original pressure diatomaceous earth (DE) filters. Construct a backwash catch basis in the mechanical room to store excess backwash water

Natatorium Deficiencies Mechanical systems: –Natatorium heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and dehumidification –Swimming pool water heating Electrical: – Electrical service available in the natatorium and in the pool mechanical room Plumbing: –Drain capacity for swimming pool deck drains –Drain capacity for swimming pool filtration backwash Lighting: –Available lighting on the pool deck (the pool lights are desired to be eliminated)
