Recruitment and Retention of Graduate Students in STEM Lois Trautvetter Northwestern University Future STEM Leaders, Washington D.C. May 4, 2016

Effective Recruitment Methods: Concrete strategies and practices for recruitment that pay-off: institutional commitment and self awareness, especially to underrepresented groups strategic admissions policies and using “high-touch” efforts Success begets further success “Critical mass” makes recruiting much easier Appealing career options both in the academic and professional sector Sense of “helping others” Outreach programs and connection with colleges and universities that already foster a sense of community and belonging “We want to get them here to understand that this a career you could [have]” 2

What Works to Increase Student Retention: Collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches Active mentoring and accessible role models Summer and Bridge Programs, (e.g., MS-PhD) internships or other opportunities to apply skills and knowledge to “real world” situations Supportive faculty and staff that provide outreach and advice to students for both academic and professional careers Professional development to support faculty and staff 3
