Lesson announcement- Verb Class --- Six to Ten Duration --- sixty minutes “A verb is a word used to say something about some person, place or thing” Wren & Martin. So, the word that is responsible to do any action or activity by the help of subject, is called a verb.
According to action verb is of two types verb Event/progressive/ action verb State/non- progressive/non- continuous verb
Examples of these verbs State verb: we feel proud of Bangladesh. People of Bangladesh want to establish democracy. Karim loves his son more than anything else. Event verb: They are talking each-other We have been reading in this school for three years. Closing the door she went out. The players played well to win the cricket match.
Another way verb is of two types Non-Finite Finite
Examples of these verbs Finite verb: Babies drink milk. Does he play cricket? Didn’t we achieve independence in 1971? The boy is writing an essay. Don’t make a noise in the class. Non-finite verb: Boys like to play mobile game. The man succeeded in life by working hard. Hasn’t she come to meet me? We study to gain knowledge. Go to do the sum.
Finite verb is of two types Finite verb Auxiliary verb Principal verb
Examples of these verbs Principal verb: The girl sings a song. I was present in the meeting. Do you know him? Have you prepared your lessons today? We should love our country as like as mother. Auxiliary verb: Does she learn his lesson? He can dance sweetly. Will they visit our country? I am waiting for the result of Masters. We have to respect our teachers.

Examples of these verbs Transitive verbs: The boy is eating a n apple. We elected him chairman. I have caught a big fish. The rich man bought a car yesterday. Intransitive verb: Birds fly. Why are you weeping? The old man is coughing. The girl is smiling. Man sleeps. Look, Mira dances.
Auxiliary verb is of two types Auxiliary verb Modal (can, may, will, must, would) Primary ( am, is, do, have, are, was)
Using auxiliary verbs Hasan has learnt his lesson. She can cook polao. The boy is reading attentively. They had done the work properly. Could you help me? She will come soon here. We have been studying for two hours.
Primary auxiliary verb is of three types Primary auxiliary To do ( do, does, did ) To be (am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been) To have ( have, has, had, having )
Auxiliary verb as principal I have a nano car. She was an owner of a farm. Students are the future hope of a nation. He is a wise person. They were present in the class. Man is man. Knowledge is power.
Non-finite verb is of three types Non- finite verb InfinitiveGerund Participle
Examples of this verbs Infinitive: People work hard to prosper in life. They fought valiantly to make the country free. Participle: The girl came to me laughing Having forgotten my direction, he went out. I found the door opened. Gerund: By turning left, he found the office. Without working hard, none can prosper in life. By cutting trees, we are making the country challenging.
Factitive verb Transitive verb having object accepts complements for expressing meaning. We elected him chairman. The company appointed him AGM. They called me a fool. We think him a wise man. Elect, select, nominate, call, employ, make, appoint, think, find etc.
Causative verb Subject and object do the same activity though the person may different. He showed me a picture on the wall. Mother remind me the incident of independent war. The boy is flying a kite with great joy. e.g. fly, show, remind, feed, raise, teach, set and after the verbs of get, make, have, cause etc. are this types of verb.

Cognate verb The intransitive which verb accepts object similar to that verb, is cognate verb. I slept a sound sleep last night. They fought a great fight for the country. She dances sweet dance. He ran a race. The girl laughs a sweet laugh. He walks morning walk every morning. The woman cried a touching cry. Didn’t Reba sing a sweet song?
Copulative verb The intransitive verb which receives complements but not object, is a copulative verb. He feels tired. The man seems to be tensed. She looks pale. The old man fell ill. The man grew old. e.g. look, feel, seem, smell, fall, hear, am, is, are, was, were, remain, turn, become, grow, taste, appear etc. are of this types of verbs.
Reflexive verb The transitive verb which accepts reflexive pronoun as an object, is a reflexive verb. The woman killed herself. One should help oneself. They learn themselves. He hurt himself. We should co-operate our-selves. Reflexive pronouns: myself, yourself, yourselves, himself, herself, ourselves, themselves, oneself, thyself, own self.
Quasi-passive verb The transitive verb expresses the meaning as a passive voice though it is in an active voice. Examples Green mango tastes sour. The book reads well. Rice sells cheap. The bed feels soft. Iron feels hard. The red rose seems sweet. Honey tastes sweet. The box feels heavy.
Perception verb The verb that is only used for feeling with nose, eye, skin, ear and tongue is called perception verb. Examples Animals see with eyes. The mango tastes sweet. The rose smells sweet. I like vegetables. We heard a hue & cry. See, feel, hear, taste, smell, observe, appear, recognize etc. are of this verb.
Linking verb The verb accepts same person as a subject and a complement. Mr. Amir is a teacher. Mr. A was a doctor. The man went mad. She looks beautiful. A.K. became a head teacher. am, is, are, was, were, been, being, smell, appear, fall, get, become, go, keep, run, feel, look, turn, grow, stay, taste, sound, remain, seem, prove etc.
