Unit 1 – p. 14 FUTURE WILL RULE RULE: 1. To express a willingness or promise to do something 2.To express a decision the speaker makes at the moment of speaking. Example:  I will take day classes and work at night. BE GOING TO RULE RULE: 1.To express a prior plan made before the moment of speaking. Example:  I am going to take computer classes next semester. PRESENT CONTINUOUS RULE PRESENT CONTINUOUS RULE: 1.To talk about plans or things that someone intends to do in the future. 2.Use future words like tomorrow. Example:  I am starting classes next week. 6

RULE RULE: 1.Use it to talk about actions, feelings, or situations that began and ended in the past. (yesterday, last night, two months ago) 2.Regular verbs are form by adding –ed to the verb. 3.Irregular verbs have their forms of past tense. 4.BE verb in the past is WAS and WERE. 5.The auxiliary word is DID. Example Example:  Mark realized that he wasn’t happy.  She didn’t forget her mother’s present.  Did you work yesterday?  Was she in class last week? Unit 1 – p SIMPLE PAST 7

RULES RULES: 1.Final –ed is pronounced /t/ after voiceless sounds, meaning that no sound comes from your throat. 2.Voiceless sounds like: /k/, /p/, /s/, /ch/, /sh/. Example Example : talked - stopped – hissed - watched - washed 3. Final –ed is pronounced /d/ after voiced sounds, when your voice box vibrates. 4. Voiced sounds like /l/, /n/, /v/, /b/, /a,e,i,o,u/ Example Example : called – rained – lived – robbed – stayed 5. Final –ed is pronounced /ed/ after /t/ and /d/ Example Example : waited – needed Unit 1 – REGULAR VERBS: Pronunciation of -ed 8

RULE RULE: 1.Use it for repeated past actions, feelings, and situations that no longer exist in the present. 2.Use it to contrast between the past and the present Example Example: Uiko used to study agriculture in Japan. Thanh didn’t use to have a car, but now she has a Lexus. Did you use to live in Paris? I never used to drink coffee, but now I always have coffee in the morning.
