The Surgical Simulation Laboratory Antonio Bernardo, MD Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery Director, Surgical Innovation Laboratory Department of Neurosurgery Weill Cornell Medical College New York, NY

THE VISION The world’s first interactive surgical simulation laboratory, featuring a fully immersive training environment. Designed to globally advance the education and treatment of brain trauma, diseases and provide real time access to neurosurgical science and treatment. Created by Dr. Antonio Bernardo, M.D.

THE VISION: The surgical innovation laboratory is a groundbreaking advance in medical technology that allows the surgeons to access a huge archive of neurosurgical data and to train in a virtual setting.

WHY: A Giant Advance in Neurosurgery Education and Training Dr. Bernardo has gathered a vast repository of data which will add enormous educational value and impact to the medical community. By recording every dissection conducted in the lab into a digital archive, Dr. Bernardo enables surgeons to learn life saving skull base surgery anywhere in the world. It will be an invaluable educational tool in countries where cadavers are hard to come by due to religious or social taboos.

WHY: Information Technology: The Next Big Medical Breakthrough In the age of information technology, the medical community is lagging. With limited resources online, textbooks dominate as an educational tool in medical schools. Written studies and medical conferences are the most interactive tools used by the medical community for advanced learning. Online resources are fragmented, limited, one-dimensional and offer little immediate applicable information. The industry is missing an advanced and centralized digital source of medical information.

WHY: To Help Save Lives The medical industry is lacking an easy-to-access global resource on critical medical procedures. Access to detailed instruction on the human anatomy and human brain is non-existent, leaving both developed and third world countries with inadequate support and medical “information” tools. Surgeons are being asked to conduct emergency medical procedures in trauma situations that are sometimes unfamiliar without a go-to resource for information.

The Process Dr. Bernardo directs a team of animators, 3D specialists and designers to create a virtual simulation of the human brain.

Life Saving Information Access Dr Bernardo’s work collection of the Human Brain is a groundbreaking advance in medical technology that will allow the user to access a huge archive of neurosurgical data on the web interactively.

One-Click Medical Solutions By clicking on a region of the brain, the user will be able to explore content of that region illustrated through: Surgical Dissection Videos. Animations to give a sense of movement through each specific region of the brain. 3D images where the user can click on a particular region and access detailed surgical approaches.

A Virtual Library Like No Other The user is able to place a virtual target on the 3D Model and instantly the correct, life saving surgical route appears allowing the surgeon to simulate surgery ahead of live surgery. This interactive visual experience of the anatomical regions of the brain integrates with text, videos, animations (fly-through and playback) featuring stereoscopic visualization.

Applied Science For Every Brain Condition For the first time, surgeons will have immediate unprecedented online access to safe surgical solutions to the brain’s most difficult regions. This can be applied to all lesions of the brain including: – Tumors – Aneurysms – Parkinson’s – Alzheimer’s – Stroke – Multiple Sclerosis

THE FUTURE: To establish a global series of virtual labs where neurosurgeons can find critical information, share their knowledge, upload their findings and make them instantly available for others to use in life saving surgery. An online community of information sharing for neurosurgeons.
