Transition to the Common Core LVUSD

The Challenge The Common Core curriculum itself will not look radically different from the lessons teachers have been presenting all along. The deep change takes place in how teachers teach that curriculum, what they do in the classroom to foster the higher-order cognitive skills that Common Core calls for. The change to Common Core calls for lessons to go deep, not broad. Robert Marzano LVUSD

2015 & Beyond Evaluation and Refinement 2015 & Beyond Evaluation and Refinement : A Transition Year LVUSD Build Readiness Dissemination & Awareness Build Readiness Dissemination & Awareness Transition Moving to the CCSS Transition Moving to the CCSS Implementation Putting Standards into Practice Implementation Putting Standards into Practice

Addressing these Shifts LVUSD

Engaging Teachers Through District-wide Committees LVUSD

CCSS Feedback Loop LVUSD

Instructional Shifts: Professional Development Focus LVUSD English Language Arts Text-Dependent Questions Close Reading Writing Genres Opinion/Argument Informational Text Complexity Academic Vocabulary Mathematics Both Mathematics Both Depth of Knowledge Effective Questioning Application of Learning Math Practices Content Shifts Professional development modules in the following areas will be provided through multiple mediums, including, site-based principal-led trainings, staff development day training, and self-paced online access. These will provide a baseline of understanding for all teachers. Opportunity to discuss and apply these concepts in PLCs is a priority!

Outcomes & Timeline for Instructional Shifts ScopeTimeframe/Deadline Administrators Receive and review Instructional Shifts Professional Development modules Deliver Instructional Shifts Professional Development modules to ensure baseline of understanding for all teachers Extend professional learning at site based on survey of staff needs Oct Oct. – May 2014 Teachers Receive information through modules Discuss implications and modify lessons with grade level/department “Try out” instructional shifts (i.e. close reading, text- dependent questions, math practices) to meet 25%. Instructional Materials Guidance Audit existing resources -See CCSS Appendix B for exemplars Audit existing resources -See CCSS Appendix B for exemplars Summer Purchase supplemental texts to support unit planning Summer Purchase supplemental texts to support unit planning Implement use of supplemental texts -Audit quality of core materials Implement use of supplemental texts -Audit quality of core materials DO NOT rush to buy anything that is branded “Common Core Approved.” LVUSD

Outcomes & Timeline for Assessment ScopeTimeframe Administrators Understand NGA implications for assigned grade- level or content area Know rubrics for three writing genres Understand how to support teachers in using School City to design/implement assessment Oct. – May 2014 Committees Gain expertise in the demands of the Next Generation Assessments Select sample NGAs that best illustrate implications for grade levels and content areas Advise selection and/or development of CCSS- aligned benchmark assessments (DWAs) Develop timelines for benchmark assessments Oct. – Dec January 2014 May 2014 Teachers Take sample items Discuss implications for instruction with grade levels and departments Develop sample classroom performance assessment Dec Throughout LVUSD

Writing Assessments & Rubrics  ELA Committee has selected CCSS-aligned rubrics to be piloted for all three genres  Selected for use on district-wide writing assessments  Does not preclude the use of other rubrics that might provide more discreet feedback  Requires that prompts be revised to be CCSS-aligned before they will be effective  Will provide consistent expectations/language across grades and content areas LVUSD
