What is Near Field Communication? NFC is a wireless technology that makes use of interacting electromagnetic radio fields to transmit small bits of information between an "initiator" and a "target."``

The History of NFC NFC traces its roots back to radio-frequency identification, or RFID, which allows a reader to send radio waves to a passive electronic tag for identification, authentication and tracking. In 2004 Nokia, Philips, and Sony established the Near Field Communication (NFC) Forum In 2006 the Nokia 6131 was the first NFC phone. In 2009 P2P or Peer to peer applications were applied to NFC technology In 2010, the first “Android” operating phone to incorporate NFC technology was announced. Within the next 5 or so years it is expected that over half of all phones manufactured will be nfc enabled with even more than that by the end of the decade.

Key Idea of Technology Basically technology that allows devices such as smartphones and tablets to transfer information through compatible radio frequencies: -Passively: one device is only capable of storing information the other is only capable of reading that information. *Ex: NFC tag on a smart poster that your phone can read. -Actively: Peer to Peer communication between two devices allows both devices to send and receive information.

Basic Concept

Practicality and Level of Implementation With the increased use of smartphones, NFC technology is becoming more and more common. It is very convenient, both for businesses and consumers, facilitating both the distribution and storage of information. Currently, European countries are the leaders in taking advantage of the benefits of using NFC, but the technology is quickly expanding to other regions. NFC technology is useful in many different settings because it makes data transfers and transactions more convenient -Advertising -Loyalty discounts and coupons -Making payments -Parking, event tickets, and reservations

How can NFC benefit a business? NFC technology will simplify your day at the office. examples By simply waving your Smartphone, it will give you access to the company’s parking garage. Give you access to your office building And you will be able to clock in or out by simply waving your phone.

How can NFC benefit a business? NFC technology will increase convenience when shopping. With NFC technology stores could replace barcodes with NFC tags and allow shoppers with smartphones to interact with objects to find out information and learn more about products they want to purchase. Coupons and reward points would be automatically preloaded on your phone and applied to your total automatically when you check out. You would pay by simply waving your smartphone over the card reader.

How can NFC benefit a business? Advertisers can take advantage of NFC technology to pass information, deals, and coupons to potential customers Lexus ad embedded with NFC in Wired magazine The ad gives you a demo of the Lexus GS enform app suite.

Companies using Near Field Communication Google Wallet - lets you store your credit and debit card information. Pay by tapping your phone on NFC terminal. Google offers from participating merchants are redeemed automatically

Cost - Benefit Analysis of NFC Cost The incremental cost is relatively small (probably around $3-$5 at present, but declining sharply as volumes rise) Mobile phone vendors need to assess the value of offering an NFC-enabled mobile device as a source of competitive differentiation.

Cost - Benefit Analysis of NFC Benefit: Whether it be retailers, manufacturers, consumers, or public transit authorities, NFC offers valuable services for everyone. Example: Interactive advertisements and posters Contact data exchanging Transportation Quick and easy setup of wireless technologies Media sharing
