NGSS AN ATTRACTIVE LESSON

Magnet Demonstration  What is this?  What happens when I place this near metal?  Do they always attract?  Why doesn’t it attract to my hand?

Four Corners Question - How is the junkyard machine similar and different to the hand magnet? Go to the corner that represents your level of understanding of this topic. Autobahn – I got this…I can teach it (80+ mph) Dirt Road – Not much knowledge (Very Bumpy) Paved Road – I can talk a bit about this topic (10 mph) Highway – I have a good foundation and can share info (45 mph)

Investigation  Pair up with someone from your 4 corner group (2-3 people 4 is too many!)  Sit together and prepare to investigate!

Rules for Investigation  Have fun  Work as a team  Work fast  Make mistakes and learn from them  Beg, borrow, and steal ideas from others

 Using the items in your bag, work as a team try to make a device that will pick up items and drop them.  You have 5 minutes to Explore Items: o Wires, o Battery, o Tape, o Nails, o Paperclips Can you replicate what you saw in the video?

Essential Question: (write at the top of your article)  How has the discovery of the electromagnet changed the way we view the relationship between electricity and magnets.

Article  Electromagnetism and Electromagnet Article  Number the Paragraphs  Mark the Text (circle key vocab and underline main ideas)

Electromagnetism Cornell Notes  Skeleton Notes  3 Costa’s Questions  Summary – To be used with Investigation

Summary  To create an electromagnet one needs to ________________.  To strengthen the electromagnet one could ___________ or ____________________. Electromagnets are used in the following everyday devices __________.  The discovery of the electromagnet has changed the way we view the relationship between electricity and magnets in that __________________.

Investigation Write-up – Analytical Writing  Class Discussion  What did you discover?  How can we make an electromagnet?  What makes a stronger electromagnet?

Learning Target  I can plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that an electric current can produce a magnetic field resulting in an electromagnet.

Extend  Using the Items in your original bag, plan an investigation to provide evidence that an electric current can produce an electromagnet. Original MaterialsAdded Materials Wires D Battery Nails Paperclips Different Batteries More D Batteries Different Size Nails Different Wire

Electromagnet Investigation Problem: What are the factors that make a strong electromagnet? Hypothesis: ______ will make an electromagnet stronger. Background: (use your summary from notes) IV: DV: Constants:Controls: Sketch: Procedure: Data Table: Analysis/Conclusion: Experimental Graphic Organizer WP LT: I can plan and conduct and investigation to provide evidence that an electric current can produce a magnetic field resulting in an electromagnet.

Analysis of Lesson  Was this an effective lesson?  In what ways did this lesson meet the standard?  Was there an appropriate level of rigor?  Was this an inquiry based lesson?
