 The Text  The Question  The Leader  The Participants

 A text full of ideas, issues and values  A text that gets people talking  The text can come from literature, history, science, math, health, philosophy, art and music  A text that raises important questions with no right or wrong answers

Inquiry, Evaluate, ClarifyEvidence, Curiosity  The Socratic Seminar open with a question ◦ Questions can come from the leader ◦ Questions can come from the participants  There is no right answer to the question  A good question leads participants back to the text  The question encourages students to evaluate, define and clarify using the text  The Inquiry that happens in a seminar is not pre-planned but evolves during the seminar

 Acts as a leader and a participant  Keeps the discussion focused on the text  Asks follow up questions  Helps participants clarify their positions  Helps get reluctant participants involved  Restrains vocal participants  Knows the text well, anticipate different interpretations  Is patient and allows unexpected interpretations of the text
