Advanced Placement & International Baccalaureate credits Some graduate programs may not accept AP/IB credits for pre- requisites AP/IB curriculum is not always sufficient preparation for entrance exams (MCAT, PCAT, DAT) or the level of rigor in health professional programs Even if a school will accept these credits, a student will not receive a grade for the coursework and this can be a disadvantage for applicants For students with AP/IB credits, we recommend taking the corresponding UW course and earn a (great) grade OR take the honors sequence Running Start credits are almost universally accepted for professional health programs with the small exception of those programs that do not accept credits from community colleges

What are health professional schools looking for? Evidence that: -- you can succeed in the program -- you know what you’re getting into -- you’ll be good at the profession -- you’re a good fit for the program -- they’re a good fit for you

Service Evidence that you’re doing this for the right reasons

Goal: To increase the number of highly qualified medical school applicants from minority groups that were underrepresented in medicine—primarily African Americans, Hispanics, and American Indians. Academic enrichment in the basic sciences and quantitative topics Learning-Skills Clinical exposure through small-group clinical rotations and full-group clinician seminars. Career development, including the exploration of healthcare careers and an individualized education plan to identify other appropriate enrichment activities All the housing costs and most meals are covered by the program. Scholars are provided with a $600 stipend which is typically distributed at the midway and at the end of the program. Some program sites offer travel assistance awards. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation also provides a needs-based scholarship for travel to and from the program site.

Shadowing Evidence that you know what you’re getting into

Leadership Evidence that you’ll succeed, that you’ll be good at the profession, and that you’ll add something new

Research Evidence that you understand: -- How research is designed -- How research is conducted -- How the results are disseminated -- The role that research plays in medicine

Non-Health Activities Evidence of passion, maturity, communication, empathy, leadership, self- care
