Welcome to HMSV Internship Orientation KC Joachim HMSV Internship Coordinator and Lecturer IF YOU DO NOT GET AUDIO PLEASE READ ALL SLIDES

Internship The internship class requires coordination of your graduation plan, watching due dates, and hard work but it is a great opportunity to gain real hands-on experience and network for future job opportunities! Remember you MUST have completed ALL HMSV courses as well as general education courses BEFORE you can start internship. You must also have a GPA of 2.0 or better. No other classes can be taken during your internship semester. Read on ….

Dates You Are Responsible For If you will be ready to complete internship in: Fall – application due by January 15th; final site paperwork due in July. Spring – application due May 15 th ; final site paperwork due November. Summer – application due September 15 th ; final site paperwork due in March. The application and advisory approval sheet are on our web page. All explained in detail in the Internship Handbook on our web page – A MUST READ BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS!

HMSV Internship Only completed AFTER all course work is complete. You must have completed 108 hours BEFORE your internship semester. Please check with your advisors at CARC ( ), or your site advisor, if you need more info from your Degree Works academic plan. Internship must be applied for approximately 8 months before you plan to start the internship (see dates). Requires about 27 hours per week of your time during your internship semester (30 in the summer) and 2 hours per week of your internship class. All explained in detail in the HMSV Internship Handbook on our web page – HMSV Program.

Lots of hours! 400 hours must be completed at your internship site during that semester: 300 of them can be non-direct, but 100 must be direct hours working with clients. This is a big commitment so get ready and plan this out. Several months before you are to start the internship YOU will need to secure an internship site. You can start by looking in the agency directory on our web site for ideas and/or Goggling “Non-profits in Hampton Roads” and/or asking other students. You must contact the sites, ask about internships, and go in for the interviews; due dates for paperwork are in the HMSV Internship Handbook on our HMSV Program web page

How do the sites know about us? Most of them LOVE interns! You are bright eager students new to the field and ready to learn! You are free help! The site is required to supervise you when ever you are there. Once per week you need one hour of uninterrupted supervision with your site supervisor. This is a commitment on their part as well. Many non-profit organizations have worked with our students in the past and are familiar with our program. The ODU Liability Insurance information can be downloaded from our web page for your site supervisor if they inquire.

The Site and Supervisor About two months before you start your internship you will have paperwork due to us so your site and supervisor can be approved by ODU. Your supervisor MUST have a masters degree in our field or a related field or TEN years experience in the field (resume required). All site paperwork is available under “Forms” on our web page. When the time comes, this site paperwork, site agreement and supervisor qualification form, are to be uploaded onto Black Board through your My Professional Learning tab (appears on your Bb AFTER you register for the internship class). DO NOT SUBMIT BY OR HARD COPY. If you are a Distance Learner you will also have a certificate to submit (explained in the DL Internship Handbook).

Class – What Class? During your internship semester you are required to have the supervision of an ODU faculty member. This faculty member will meet with you once a week in the form of a class either on campus or on-line. They will help you keep your logs from time at your site and other projects needed to complete the internship experience (example syllabus for the class is on our web page). You must be registered for the class to get internship credit.

If you are a Distance Learner: You are required to take the Internship class on-line by Adobe Connect. You MUST attend each class. They are not available by recording. They are not done on your own time like past DL courses you may have taken. The class is offered on Wednesdays only, either from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ONLY. You must attend each Adobe Connect class in real time to receive credit for internship.

Professionalism A MUST When you are in the field you are representing ODU and yourself for future job opportunities. Please dress appropriately. Be on time. Be dependable. No calls or texts while working. Keep your personal life to yourself. Be professional.

HMSV Internship Handbook Everything you need to know about the internship in HMSV is available in the HMSV Internship Handbook on the HMSV Program web site which is part of the ODU web site. YOU MUST READ IT!!!! It will save you a great deal of time and worry. You are responsible for knowing ALL the information in the HMSV Internship Handbook. AFTER reading the handbook, if you still have questions contact CARC for academic advising ( ), your site advisor for academic advising, or KC Joachim – HMSV Internship Coordinator. KC Joachim at

HMSV Deadlines REMEMBER - For internship applications: Fall Internship – January 15 th Spring Internship – May 15 th Summer Internship – September 15 th. Within two weeks of submitting your application on our internship web page, you will receive a tentative approval. After that start looking around for sites. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE MONTH YOUR PAPERWOK IS DUE. Sites have already selected their interns by then.

Second Internship Deadline You will be reminded by to submit the paperwork: site agreement, academic advisory approval form (located on the link at the bottom of the application),supervisor qualification form, and DL certification if applicable. All must be signed and fully submitted to the appropriate location. All forms under Application or Forms on our web page – HMSV Program. REMINDER: These PAPERWORK deadlines are as follows: Fall internship – First week in July Spring Internship – Last week in November Summer Internship – Last week of March

Once your Site and Supervisor are Approved … Once the paperwork you have submitted is approved, you will be sent a confirmation and you are ready to go! You can only start your internship on the first day of the semester and you must complete it on the last days of the semester. A lot of work but a great experience! Please review this often as your time gets closer. Good luck to each of you!

We are here for support: AFTER reading the HMSV Internship Handbook, please contact me for additional questions: During your internship semester you will have your class instructor and site supervisor for help and support.
