Update on U.S.EPA Cookstove Research Activities Jim Jetter 2013 Forum on Clean Cookstoves & Fuels

Background – EPA’s Stove Research Conducted research on coal-burning stoves in China in 1980s Sponsored cookstove research led by Kirk Smith in 1990s Developed regulatory program for certifying wood-burning heating stoves in the U.S. from 1980s to present Provided technical support to Partnership for Clean Indoor Air (now integrated with the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves) 2

Cookstove Testing Conducted a first round of cookstove tests in 2007 – Initial independent evaluation of laboratory performance – Results published Conducted a second round of cookstove tests in 2010 – Tested newer model stoves and more fuel types – Measured emissions of additional air pollutants – Evaluated performance with two fuel moisture levels – Helped support development of IWA guidelines for performance – Results published A third round of tests is currently in progress – Testing additional fuels (LPG, alcohol, kerosene) and solar cookers – Helping to address increasing demand for independent testing – Supporting development of regional testing centers – For more info: 3
