AP POETRY ESSAY STUDY SESSION Writer’s Workshop

STEP 1: PICK UP A RANDOM ESSAY  Together, we are going to dissect this prompt and read through the poem  We will follow with a class discussion on the poem  Then we will determine which literary techniques or poetic devices we can identify and would like to use.

STEP 2: CHOOSE A PARTNER  You and your partner are in charge of skimming through your 2 essays (both of you read BOTH of the essays)  You will be grading each essay TOGETHER but ONLY on textual support and commentary balance.  Use the rubric to score this essay’s body paragraphs  THEN we will examine a sample essay for comparison

It is important to know these terms to be able to provide a through exploration of the methods used by poets and authors, however, it is more important to know HOW they are being used and WHY. What is the big purpose of poetry?  To replicate emotion, explain abstract ideas, express emotion, present the world in a different light Do not focus on “how you feel” as the reader when reading the poem, rather look objectively at what the author is attempting to portray, how the author goes about doing so, and why that all matters to meaning and tone. i.e. Imagery is not intended to “help you to visualize the situation”, but enhances the tone, adds to the effect of the words, provides a setting…
