Question 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Mainstream films have a medium to large budget to base their production around. The film genre and content attracts a wide mainstream audience - a wide range of social groups who would watch the film. They usually have well known actors who play the main characters as they have to money to do so. As they may have a large amount of money to use, they most likely have high production values and a high profile marketing campaign. They would promote their film using trailers, billboards, posters, advertising on TV and online. An example of a mainstream thriller film would be 'Se7en' who is directed by New Line Cinema, who are world known. A Independent film however would have a low budget to base their production on. The genre and content would attract the niche audience - not worldwide, a small portion of a mass market. They wouldn't have famous/well known stars as they wouldn't be able to afford it, they would have new emerging talent. No expensive special effects would be used throughout the film, the drive of the film would be through the characters and narrative. Their production values would reflect from a low budget and they would have a small marketing campaign. Marketing through cheap ways would be through viral marketing like websites, social media and festivals. An example of a independent film production would be 'The Holding' who is directed by Lionsgate.

Cat and mouse would be a mainstream production film, which would be in cinemas around the world and released on DVD. New Line Cinema and Sony Pictures would distribute our film. Sony Pictures distributed 'The Call' which was the main inspiration to our media story line. New Line Cinema distributed the thriller film 'Se7en', which is a very popular film; so to make the most profit these companies would be ideal to distribute our film. Our story line isn't like a common thriller. Normally the victim is completely innocent and vulnerable, but our victim has done bad which has caused the victim to seek revenge, from his psychological problems. However the mise en scene used is like a typical thriller film.

To promote our film, we would create a trailer that doesn't give too much information out to the audience but will get them interested and excited to see what happens. We would heavily invest on marketing campaigns. YouTube advertisements would be our main focus, YouTube is known worldwide and has a huge range of different social groups, this would expand our target audience. Film websites such as IMDB could also advertise our film, along with teaser clips of the film closer to the release of the film; which would keep the audience's attention on the upcoming release. Our film will be shown in major cinema's, such as Cineworld and the Odeon in the UK and cinemas in the USA. Our expected figure is around £12,000,000 for the opening weekend and our expected gross is around £40,000,000 - £50,000,000.
