Page 2 Warm-Up Your Brains! Write a definition for sedimentary rocks!

Page 3 What is a sedimentary rock? Sedimentary rock is formed by weathering and erosion. Sediments are moved from one place to another by several processes, erosion. Sediments are deposited in layers, with the older ones on the bottom. The layers become compacted and cemented together via great pressure.

Page 4 What is a sedimentary rock?  Sedimentary Rocks are formed at or near the Earth’s surface  No heat and pressure involved  Strata – layers of rock  Stratification – the process in which sedimentary rocks are arranged in layers

Page 5 Three Types of Sedimentary Rocks Clastic – made of fragments of rock cemented together with calcite or quartz Chemical sedimentary – minerals crystallize out of solution to become rock Organic sedimentary – remains of plants and animals

Page 6 How do sedimentary rocks form? They usually form in areas that are wet or were once wet!

Page 7 How do we identify sedimentary rocks? Strata – clear layering of sediments Clasts – pieces of other rocks Fossils – remains of once living organisms

Page 8 Mini-Lab Using what we have discussed in class, identify each of the sedimentary rock samples that you have.

Page 9 Wrap Up…For Today Ticket Out The Door Define sedimentary rock. What characteristics can we use to identify sedimentary rocks?
