What are Fossil Fuels? Hydrocarbons formed remains of dead plants and animals Usually Coal, Fuel Oil, or Natural Gas

What is a Fossil Fuel Power Station? A building where chemical energy in fossil fuels is converted into electric energy Uses steam cycle or the gas turbine cycle. Steam cycle requires that water is heated into steam to turn turbines by combusting coal. Gas turbine cycle combusts natural gas or light oil to heat air, after air is compressed. Health/pollution hazard- The combustion required releases gases such as carbon dioxide which can lead to acid rain and smog.

How do they work?

Around the World #17 largest worldwide power producing facility #1 largest worldwide fossil fuel facility Surgut-2 power station Surgut, Russia 5,597.1 MW in TWh GE made generators with 56% efficiency 33% more efficient than other Russian plants Built in 1985 Owned by E. ON Russia Natural Gas Fresh water

Valmont Fossil Fuel Power Station ➢ Built: 1921 ➢ Fuel source: Low-sulfur coal from western CO ➢ Power produced: 186 MW coal-fired power plant, 43 MW natural gas combustion turbine ➢ 2 operating units: Coal unit will be shut down in 2017 as a result of the Colorado Clean Air - Clean Jobs Act ➢ Colorado Legislature passed the act in 2010, overall goal to reduce power coming from coal

World Energy Use Oil is the most popular fossil fuel. Natural gas has become more more commonly used than coal

World Energy Use US leads in world Oil Consumption US uses Billion cubic feet of Natural gas yearly

In the Past France energy cut 2050 cut 33% Nuclear power by 2025 EU committed to cut emissions in 28 countries by 40% by 2030 Keep it in the Ground Act of 2015 Senators 11/4/ billion tons potential end federal leases save $1 trillion by 2100

Questions What are the 3 main forms of Fossil Fuels? Where is the largest Fossil Fuel power station?
