COMENIUS SCHOOL PARTNER SHIP PROJECT

Çanakkale Anatolian High School 1.What is pollution 2.Types of Pollution 3.Causes of pollution 4. What can we do to reduce pollution? 5.What can we do to improve quality water in our community? 6.The activities we did to improve quality and consumption of water in our community

What Is Pollution? Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into a natural environment that causes instablity, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem.

Types of Pollution 1- Air Pollution 2- Water Pollution 3- Thermal Pollution 4- Soil Pollution 5- Radioactive Pollution

Causes of Air Pollution Natural Causes -Forest Fires -Volcanic eruptions

Man-made Causes - Deforestation - Burning of Fossil Fuels - Rapid Industralization - Emission from vehicles

Causes of Water Pollution Community waste waters - Industrial wastes - Agricultural causes

-Nuclear power plants -Coal fired power plants -Industrial wastes -Domestic sewage

Causes of Soil Pollution -Domestic wastes -Agricultural wastes -Industrial wastes -Salination

Causes of Radioactive Pollution -Nuclear weapons -Reactors and Nuclear fuel -Waste waters containing these wastes -X-rays used in medical practices -Ultra violent rays present in solar radiations

-Choose efficient, low- polluting models of vehicles -When possible use public transportation walk or ride a bike -Plant trees

-Use environmentally- friendly household products -Apply natural pesticides and fertilizers -Avoid littering in rivers, lakes and oceans

--Avoid consuming energy more than necessity -Burn less coal, oil or gas

-Reduce Temperature and Volume of Discharge -Store and Reuse Heated Water

Soil Pollution -Use organic, biodegraduble herbicides and pesticides whenever possible -Plant native species and plan your plantings in a way that minimizes run off

-Reduce, reuse and recycle minimize the amount of trash to our landfills and recycle, especially like batteries, tires and plastics. -Dispose of household chemicals properly

Radioactive Pollution -The disposal of radioactive material must be safe and secure

Avoid hazardous household product. Don't misuse the sewage system. Don't use pesticides or other hazardous materials in your garden WHAT CAN WE DO TO IMPROVE QUALITY WATER IN OUR COMMUNITY?

Rain Gardens Rain gardens are attractive, functional landscaped areas designed to capture and filter storm water before it runs off into storm drains. They collect water in natural or constructed shallow vegetated depressions and allow it to soak into the ground slowly. This reduces the potential for erosion and minimizes the amount of pollutants flowing from a yard into a storm drain.

THE ACTIVITIES WE DID TO IMPROVE QUALITY AND CONSUMPTION OF WATER IN OUR COMMUNITY We held meetings regularly with the students and parents. We informed them about the importantance of water and ways to save water.

We always think that public awareness is the most important matter. We prepared informative brochures and leaflets about our project.

We had meetings with the mayor of Çanakkale and Director of State hydraulic works, we informed them about our project and we agreed to work together during the implementation of this project.

Articles about efficient ways to save water was published in a local newspapers.

We organized ‘’ Walk for Water’’ event. We walked 6 kilometres to symbolize the daily trek women and children make everyday in Africa to collect water.

We prepared a funny and informative presentation for kids and present it in a kindergarden. After the presentation we made some experiments with them.

We held a competition to raise awareness about eco-friendly houses. Students made models of eco-friendly houses.
