Project Name: Nutrition – from field to body. Educator(s): Bianca Netto Rodrigues Murilo Cruz School or Educational Institution: Colégio Poliedro – Private school ; Middle school. Specify the Website: Content / Subjects or Curriculum: Science Age / Educational Level or Grade: Middle school (from 11 to 13) Project Objectives: - Promote reflection about nutrition prioritizing family agriculture since it’s the international year of family agriculture (UNESCO). - Estimulate creativity in presentation by elaborating a game. -Reinforce methodological procedures in projects. -Collaborate in group work to solve problem situations.

Description of the project OBJECTIVES: Knowlwdge building / critical thinking Communication skills development Collaboration (team work) Problem solving and innovation (creativity) Student self assesment #Long Term activity Nutrition is a complex topic which deals with different aspects such as: economical, political, cultural, environmental and health. To discuss about these aspects of nutrition students collected data, constructed a game with this problematization and realized an interview. These were presented and were assessed by the teachers, peers and themselves. The final product was a monography in magazine format. Planning and Design of the learning environment The description of the Project with all the phases was given to groups so they would have a clear idea of the Project as a whole. All phases were based on interdisciplinary work from beginning to end.

Evidence of Learning Being a long term Project, there was need to follow the students closely in order to provide adequate feedback on their researches, gaming creation, interviews and presentations. Along with my feedback we also held peer to peer evaluation and self-assessments to guarantee that the objectives traced were acomplished. Students showed their understanding of the subject by producing interesting and deep questionnaires, profound researches, envolving games and elaborate monographies. All products created were evaluated through rubrics to assure the student understands what he would be evaluated by.

Collaboration Firstly, when acquiring data, students were asked to join groups of 6 and each group would read a different chapter of a six chapter book. Then one student from each group had to join a different one composed by one individual from another group. Therefore this new group would have one student responsible to share the understanding of his/her chapter so all groups ended up knowing the entire book. Then groups had to define what type of game they would create and what aspect of nutrition they would discuss, as well as decisions of theme and whom to interview. At the end of the process, each group was responsible in creating a part of a magazine with all data collected, interviews and reports about the subject developed. The entire class had to produce one magazine, so each group depended on the others to finalize it, or else parts of it would be missing.

Knowledge Construction and critical thinking Extending Learning beyond the classroom. Students had to watch a documentary “O Veneno está na Mesa 2”, read a book called “Alimentos em pratos limpos” in groups as explained before. They also had to produce a questionnaire and interview families who work in agriculture/people who consume organic products/elder people to explain the difference between food nowadays and before/traditional food. By doing so, they had to research about the topics and understand how they could approach these different people in order to obtain their information. In game creation, students had to think like game developers to create motivational and creative games. Finally, understand what is behind a good magazine to produce theirs. Their contact with people who were interviewed, opened their eyes to various different subjects and produced changes in their daily lives. Reflecting about their health habits promoted debates in their social circle and the games, which will be presented in an open school event, will enable others to understand and discuss the same subjects dealt in this project.
