Year 6 Testing and Preparation Arrangements Summer 2016

2016 Statutory Assessment… the story so far Tests for Reading, Maths and SPaG (marked externally on screen) Science Sampling for some schools No separate papers for what was Level 6 / More Able Raw score converted to a scaled score Teacher Assessment for Reading, Writing, Maths and Science

2016 Statutory Assessment Timetable

Problems… School Leaders want the tests suspended this year because: This is the first year after the removal of “levels” The teacher-marked part of this year’s key stage 2 assessments is based on an “interim” framework. Next year will bring about more change Primary schools were not being offered much support from their local authorities in transitioning to life after levels Continuing with levels, the changes have also resulted in complications around measuring the ability of children working below the expected standard Writing assessments have been brought forward by a month* In two weeks alone, more than 30 amendments were made to primary assessment documentation At the same time, schools were informed all pupils would be expected to use a comma as a thousand separator Changes in the written assessment are also adding to teachers’ burdens

However… We have worked hard all year on these and our children deserve a chance.

Important things to note about spelling! Children can write in upper or lower case unless it is a proper noun – then it must be written in lower case with the appropriate capital to get the mark If children insert an incorrect apostrophe or hyphen into a word – the word is classed as being mis-spelt BUT – children will also be penalised for spelling things incorrectly in paper 1 eg if they mis-spell: verb forms contractions (Q7 – doesn’t) prefixes and suffixes (Q12 and Q39 – forming new adjectives from nouns) plurals They will also be penalised if they mis-use capitals, eg in Q41 the word inserted into the gap, must begin with a lower case letter: this has implications for accuracy in handwriting – especially w s c o v k p u
