1301 Spring 2016 Day 4 Lessons

What to expect today: Questions over the reading Check Attendance Summary Thesis Statements First Draft of the summary Shorter summaries vs. longer summaries Participation: Summary/Response of BHotTM

Summary Thesis Should be a single sentence summarizing the main point of the source. The thesis may constitute the first sentence of your longer overall summary, a deductive organization (thesis first, supporting details second). Or it may constitute the final sentence of your longer overall summary, an inductive organization (supporting details first, thesis last). It consists of a subject and an assertion. Should contain the title of the article and the author’s name. Look at examples on page 20.

First Draft The first draft of the summary consists of your summary thesis preceding your brief section summary sentences.

Shorter Summary vs. Longer Summary A shorter summary combines first draft of your summary with some examples. A longer summary combines a shorter summary with specific examples. Summaries should not generally be longer than ¼ the length of the original passage.

Writing a Response A response IS NOT a summary. A response will involve your opinion of two things: ▫Whether or not you agree/disagree with the author’s main point And ▫Whether or not you liked/disliked the way the author wrote. NOTE: It is possible for you to disagree with the author and STILL like the way they wrote something or to agree with their point and dislike the way they presented things. You can also like two or three things about the author’s writing or examples and still disagree with the overall article.

Writing a Response, cont’d Start with your overall reaction to the text. Did you like/dislike it? Did you agree/disagree with it? Your next sentences should support your overall thesis with specific examples from your own experience and/or the text. Try to comment both on the subject matter of the article AND the author’s writing style.

What to do for next time: Read “Critical Reading” in W&RAtC (51-62). Full summary/response over “Critical Reading” due in folder. The form is on Canvas MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE 3 QUESTIONS READY FOR CLASS DISCUSSION NEXT TIME.
