apply innovation Slide 1 Copying and reverse engineering Digitising of complex forms for replication and re- manufacturing

apply innovation Slide 2 Copying and reverse engineering Digitising is a way to gather a large volume of data to define the surface of a complex, unknown component It uses many of the techniques needed for scanning, except that the motion of the CMM is controlled in a different manner. On known parts, the probe can move in a pre-defined vector, accommodating any measurement errors in its travel. By contrast, on an unknown part the probe is moved within a pre-defined grid and the probe deflection is used to determine which way to move the CMM to keep the probe stylus in constant contact with the surface.

apply innovation Slide 3 Digitising pros and cons High speed data collection –Scanning is all about capturing lots of surface data quickly. Scanning probes can record 100s or 1,000s of points per second. Wear on the stylus –Friction between the stylus and the part causes wear. BenefitsDisadvantages

apply innovation Slide 4 Scanning (digitising) is a method to gather data about an undefined 2D or 3D shape The captured data can then be used to create NC part programs or CAD outputs What is digitising?

apply innovation Slide 5 Digitising Re-manufacture and reverse engineering Digitising provides large amounts of data to define unknown contoured surfaces Digitising a master part to acquire an accurate description of the surface Scanning cycle and data analysis handled by Tracecut software Digitising can be performed on CMMs, machine tools or dedicated platforms like Cyclone
