Rubric 1 point Underlines 1 point circles 1 point jot down ideas 1 point for each identification 1 point each discussion = 4 points IdentifyDiscuss Economic/ cheaper cars The largest supply of used cars in the region is Australia/New Zealand. The distance to these countries is much less than that to other countries which are currently the source of most of the used cars. Therefore, the cost of used cars will go down. Regional homogenization Drivers in both New Zealand and Australia, the largest and dominant countries of the South Pacific, drive on the left-hand side. When Samoa begins to do the same, there will be more consistency across the region. As people from Samoa visit Australia and New Zealand (and vice versa) there will be less difficulty in driving. Safety in time of typhoon With a larger pool of available used cars, it is likely that more people will own cars and will therefore be able to get to safe, inland areas when typhoons are present.

IdentifyDiscuss EconomicBuses will have to have doors switched from the left side to the right side. Cars currently owned by Samoans will now have their steering wheel on the “ wrong ” side and will depreciate in value. The price of gasoline will rise as there will be increased demand for it due to the increasing number of drivers. DangerThere will be a period of time during which driving will be very dangerous as some people may become confused and drive on the wrong side of the road. Samoa ’ s winding, jungle roads are already hazardous and will become even more so. EnvironmentalIn the next few years, many (and eventually ALL) of the cars that Samoans currently drive will need to be scrapped because they are no longer the correct type. This will increase the number of cars in junk- yards and landfills. With more Samoans able to afford and obtain cars, pollution related to driving them will increase. 1 point for each identification 1 point each discussion = 4 points
