6.E.2.2 Introduction into The Earth’s Plates / Plate Tectonics Friday, January 15th, 2016)

WARM UP Bring your notebook, pencil, and agenda to your desk Put your homework in the wire basket for your block – it is due today (no exceptions!) Complete Friday’s warm up now YOU ARE QUIET, WORKING WHEN THE BELL RINGS

TODAY’S AGENDA You will be recording notes today via a guided notes worksheet Then you will use your chromebook and access the teacher wiki page You will be using you these guided notes and information from the powerpoint to create a Plate Boundary Brochure This will count as a formal grade! (Your last formal grade for Quarter 2)

GUIDED NOTES WORKSHEET You will receive this handout now Follow along and complete the blanks from each slide Afterwards you will glue this into your interactive notebook

WRITE IN NOTEBOOK The Earth’s crust is divided into 12 major tectonic plates These plates sit on the lithosphere Lithosphere = the crust and upper portion of the mantle

WRITE IN NOTEBOOK The Earth’s plates move about 1 inch per year Convective currents in the mantle cause (make ) plate moves As they move, the plates : Press against one another ( convergent boundary ) Pull apart from one another ( divergent boundary ) Scrape against one another ( transform boundary )

DRAW THESE PLATE BOUNDARIES IN YOUR NOTEBOOK……

WATCH THIS VIDEO WHAT IS CONVECTION?

CONVECTION CURRENTS IN THE EARTH Another video that describes this process

WRITE IN NOTEBOOK Major geological events occur at these plate boundaries including: At these plate boundaries we get Earthquakes Volcanic Eruptions Mountain Building

INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK Glue this into your interactive notebook now

CHROMEBOOKS TODAY… You will be dismissed to get your chromebooks You will access the teacher wiki page Click on the link and wait for instructions Select the powerpoint Plate Tectonics Brochure January We will discuss this together now

CREATIVITY TIME! You will be creating an information brochure

The following slides give you ideas about how you will set up your brochure. You can choose to draw other images than the ones that I have included by researching google images. RESEARCH

WATCH AS I SHOW YOU HOW TO FOLD AND LABEL EACH PAGE

OUTSIDE COVER Creative title Plate Tectonics Name

LEFT SIDE INSIDE Divergent Plate Boundary Definition Diagram (picture) Explanation of what happens at this plate boundary

MIDDLE INSIDE Transform Plate Boundary Definition Diagram (picture) Explanation of what happens at this plate boundary

RIGHT SIDE INSIDE Convergent Plate Boundary Continental – Continental Definition Diagram (picture) Explanation of what happens at this plate boundary

BACK COVER Convergent Plate Boundary Continental – Oceanic Definition Diagram (picture) Explanation of what happens at this plate boundary

Include: Definition Diagram What happens here Use colors and take your time making the brochure look colorful and organized! SET UP EACH PAGE LIKE STATED IN POWERPOINT

WRITE IN BROCHURE Divergent Plate Boundary When two tectonic plates pull apart (move away from one another) This occurs in the oceans!

WRITE IN BROCHURE Divergent Plate Boundary This causes New crust to form (magma moves up, cools as lava on the surface forming new crust) Undersea volcanoes The Mid ocean rift

WRITE IN BROCHURE Transform Plate Boundary When two tectonic plates scrape past one another Causes earthquakes to occur here

WRITE IN BROCHURE Transform Plate Boundary San Andreas fault in California is an example

WRITE IN BROCHURE Convergent plate boundaries When two tectonic plates push together (move towards one another) Continental – Continental Plate Boundary: 2 plates press against each other creating mountains Remember they are the same density, so they just push each other up

WRITE IN BROCHURE Convergent plate boundaries When two tectonic plates push together (move towards one another) Continental – Oceanic Plate Boundary: 2 plates press against each other creating subduction zone (often causes volcanoes) This movement destroys crust material (goes back into the mantle) Remember they are different densities so the oceanic crust subducts under the continental crust
