A variety of ancient cultures existed in Chile centuries ago. –Aymara farmers –Fishermen –Diaguita Indians –Araucian Indians –Hunters and fishermen. The Spanish-Portuguese treaty in 1494.

1520 – Ferdinand Magellan, the first European explorer came to Chile, he landed on Chiloe Island. In 1541 Pedro de Valdivia’s expedition reached the Mapocho Valley in Chile. Santiago was founded that year. The Spanish attacks into Chile went only as far as the Rio Biobio.

1810– The beginning of Chile’s independence from Spain. 1890’s – Chile’s civil war. The political state of Chile was unstable throughout the beginning of the 20 th century. Democracy was established in 1989.
