 Unit 11 Notes 4

 1. The Berlin Airlift, Korean War, Bay of Pigs, and Vietnam were all actions taken by the US in an attempt to  A. End terrorism.  B. Defeat communism.  C. End World War II.  D. Prevent the Soviets from invading Western Europe.

 2. Rather than attempting to force the Soviet Union to give up the portions of Eastern Europe it had inhabited during WWII, the US elected to concentrate its efforts on preventing the expansion of communism into Western Europe and other parts of the world. This policy was known as  Containment  Détente  The Marshall Plan  The Great Society

 Who: Communist backed North Vietnam vs. Democratic backed South Vietnam  When:  Where: Vietnam

 Tet Offensive: series of surprise attacks by the Vietcong (rebels) and North Vietnamese forces, on cities and towns in South Vietnam. Turning point in war.  Viet Cong: Communist forces that fought against both the government of South Vietnam and the armed forces of the U.S

 Domino Theory: theory that if one nation comes under Communist control, then neighboring nations will also come under Communist control.  Effect: The U.S. withdrew from Vietnam and it fell to Communist forces. The nation was greatly divided over this conflict.
