Skyline Course Selection & Planning Classes of 2019

Course Selection Timeline Mon, March 16 (7am) –Wed March 25 (4pm) Student Access is open for students to input requested course selections Friday March 13th Middle School Presentations Wednesday, March 18th Q & A with counselors during lunches

Timeline (cont’) Wednesday, March 25 –Student Access to input course requests closes at 4:00pm Mon April 6 through Wed April 15– Family Access opens as VIEW ONLY for students/parents to review requests to ensure accuracy Wednesday, April 16– Last day for paperwork with parent signature to be turned in to the counseling office for requesting course selection changes.

Class of 2019 Graduation Requirements (Core 24) (Core 24)

Requirements Please see course catalogue for specifics 1. Satisfy graduation credits (Core 24) 2. Meet technology proficiency 3. Earn Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA) 4. High School and Beyond Plan

How will I earn HS credits? t A transcript is the official record of your high school classes & credits t 1 year = 2 semesters (18 weeks each) t A semester course = 0.5 credit t A year-long course = 1.0 credit

High School Credits t By passing all of your classes each semester, you earn 6.0 credits every year of High School t 6.0 credits/year x 4 years = 24.0 credits t Total number of credits needed for graduation = 24.0 credits

Selecting Freshman Courses

What do I take in 9 th grade? 1. Literature and Composition 1 2. World History 1/Civics 3. Math 4. Science 5. Elective - PE, Health 6. Elective (1 year-long class* or 2 semester- long classes) *Most common are World Language, Music, PE

Humanities Block Options t Regular Block: t 1 classroom t 2 consecutive periods (i.e. 1 st & 2 nd periods) t 2 teachers t Split Block: t 2 separate classrooms t 2 separate periods – may or may not be back to back t Same students in both classes t Honors Block: t 1 classroom, 2 consecutive periods t 2 teachers t A successful honors student should be intellectually curious, enjoy reading & read on a regular basis, possess strong study habits and be able to write a five paragraph essay

Math Selection The math sequence (non-IEP) is: t Common Core 8 or Common Core 8/Algebra1(8 th grade math) t CC Algebra I t CC Geometry t CC Algebra II t Advanced Algebra, Pre-calculus, IB Mathematics I, Statistics, or Financial Algebra t Algebra 1 Lab & Geometry Lab –support classes for students who struggle with math; must be taken concurrently with Algebra 1 or Geometry

Equivalency Courses There are some courses that satisfy more than one graduation requirement. (example: Health course satisfies both Health & 0.5 CTE requirement) These equivalent courses do not reduce the number of credits required for graduation, but may change the courses needed to fulfill graduation requirements.

Outside Credit Options Students are able to take up to 4.0 credits outside of Skyline, but only 2.0 per school year (such as online courses, private accredited institutions, etc.) 50% of any graduation requirement must be met through Issaquah School District courses Students must receive written pre-approval to earn outside credit

Course Selection Things to keep in mind when selecting course requests:  Balance - consider academic load & outside involvements; sports, clubs, home, etc.  Learning Recommendations for sequential courses  Graduation requirements  Your Personal Pathway/ High School & Beyond Plan

Course Alternative Selections Choose classes wisely- your first choices might not be available. Alternative choices - If no alternatives are listed, an alternative class will be selected for you. Alternatives MUST be different than first choice classes.

Course Selection Expectations Master schedule is developed based on courses requested When you choose a course you commit to completing the course in its entirety to the best of your ability Course changes after first week through 20 calendar days remain on transcript with a “W” On day 21 and beyond – any courses dropped will remain on transcript with an “F”

7 th Period Option 7 th period courses are completely optional – Please read Course Guide carefully as these classes will have different learning requirements, meeting times, and possible outside of class requirements (service hours, lab hours, flexibility, etc.). Optional 7 th period registration process is available on the course selection portion of the SHS website

Trouble Shooting Student Access Login If you do not know have an in Student Access – enter one when you log on to S.A. – Your must be different from your parent’s in S.A. If you do not know your password – click on the “forgot password” to have it ed to you If you do not know your password and do not have an in Student Access – Please come to the counseling office to update your information Please try logging into your Student Access account tonight!
