This will be our 5th year as AISD’s middle school fine arts academy Lamar’s Fine Arts Academy is aligned with McCallum’s FAA Go Scotties!

Fine Arts Academy Accelerated Curriculum Design Go Scotties! School-wide Engagement All programs, including FAA strands, are open to all students. This provides creative learning opportunities for all students and results in higher academic achievement at all levels. It also creates a school- wide culture of arts engagement that attracts high levels of parent and community engagement. Positive Peer Pressure By design, 1/3 of the total student population are FAA students, 1/3 participate fully in FAA programs but are not designated as FAA students, and 1/3 take the minimum fine arts requirements. This 1/3- 1/3-1/3 design provides a rich creative learning environment where a 2/3 majority in every class are highly engaged in the arts and bring creative problem-solving and engagement strategies to their peers.

Fine Arts Academy Accelerated Curriculum Design Go Scotties! Creative Multipliers Students enroll in one to four fine arts course per school year. Students who enroll in multiple, complementary fine arts classes develop their artistic and creative abilities at an accelerated rate due to mutually reinforcing creative experiences. Substantial Immersion All fine arts courses are year-long and ability-based. This allows students to accelerate learning among peers of comparable ability. Accelerated learning also creates demand for advanced classes (fine arts and non-fine arts), which Lamar currently provides.

Lamar Project Lead The Way - Engineering Strand Students may begin strand in 6 th grade by taking the foundational units DM & AR, then take the specialization units ME & ST in grade 7 followed by the high school course IED for one full weighted credit in 8 th grade. Students that begin in 7 th grade may double-up on DM&AR and ME&ST then take IED in grade 8. Go Scotties!

Lamar PLTW - Engineering Foundational Units -- Grades 6-8 (yearlong course for a high school credit) Design & Modeling (DM) Students use Autodesk design software to create a virtual image of their designs and produce a portfolio of their innovative solutions Automation & Robotics (AR) Students use the VEX Robotics platform to design, build, and program real-world objects as they learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation and computer control systems. DM & AR are foundational units that must be taken before specialization units.

Lamar PLTW -- Engineering Specialization Units -- Grades 6-8 Prerequisite: DMAR Semester 3 or 4 – Magic of Electrons (ME) Through hands-on projects, students explore electricity, the behavior and parts of atoms, and sensing devices. They learn basic circuitry design and the impact of electricity around them. Semester 3 or 4 – Science of Technology (ST) Students apply the concepts of physics, chemistry, and nanotechnology to STEM activities and projects, including making ice cream, cleaning up an oil spill, and discovering the properties of nano-materials.

Lamar PLTW -- Engineering Readiness Unit – Grade 8 Prerequisite: either ME or ST Yearlong – Introduction to Engineering Design (weighted high school credit) Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.

Lamar Project Lead The Way – Computer Science Strand Students may begin strand in 6 th grade by taking ICS, then take Web Design* I and II in 7 th grade followed by CSE in 8 th grade. Students that begin in 7 th grade may take ICS followed by CSE in 8 th grade. *Web Design I and II are not PLTW courses.

Lamar Lamar PLTW – Computer Science Intro to Computer Science (ICS) Grades 6-8 ( yearlong course for a high school credit) The first computer science course for students who have never programmed before. Students work in teams to create simple apps for mobile devices using MIT App Inventor. Students explore the impact of computing in society and the application of computing across career paths and build skills and awareness in digital citizenship and cybersecurity. Students model, simulate, and analyze data about themselves and their interests. They also transfer the understanding of programming gained in App Inventor to learn introductory elements of text-based programming in Python ® to create strategy games

Lamar Lamar PLTW – Computer Science Web Design I (prerequisite: n/a) Grades 6-8 Students gain knowledge and skills in the area of web design, appropriate use of hardware, software, and connectivity technologies. Students explore the programming languages (HTML, JavaScript) used in the design of websites and other uses. Semester-long: Students gain knowledge and skills in the area of web design, appropriate use of hardware, software, and connectivity technologies. Students explore the programming languages (HTML, JavaScript) used in the design of websites and other uses. Web Design II (prerequisite: Web Design I) Grades 6-8 Students gain advanced knowledge and skills in the area of web design, appropriate use of hardware, software, and connectivity technologies. Students continue exploring and applying the programming languages (HTML, JavaScript) used in the design of websites and other uses. Semester-long: Students gain advanced knowledge and skills in the area of web design, appropriate use of hardware, software, and connectivity technologies. Computer Science & Software Engineering (CSE) – yearlong 8 th grade only – 1 year weighted credit Prerequisite: a tech course and must have passed or currently enrolled in Algebra I Open doors in any career with computer science! In CSE, students create apps for mobile devices, automate tasks in a variety of languages, and find patterns in data. Students collaborate to create and present solutions that can improve people’s lives, and weigh the ethical and societal issues of how computing and connectivity are changing the world. This course aligns with the AP Computer Science Principles course. Lamar Lamar PLTW – Computer Science
