THE WASHROOM INCLUSIVITY PROJECT The Washroom Inclusivity project at St.FX is an ongoing campaign that will map washrooms and assess their inclusivity to various members of our community. It will look critically at our spaces and how they affect people with various needs. Accessibility gender neutral washrooms Baby change tables. This project will create a map to be used as a tool for students and community members looking for inclusive spaces, an education tool to promote awareness and as a document to encourage the future implementation of inclusive washrooms on campus.

PEOPLE This is a collaborate and intersectional campaign which is why we feel it is important to discuss, consult and listen to everyone’s thoughts on the topic Equity advocate under the VP of the students union Hayley Mcostrich Office hours: Monday: 2-4, Tuesday: 12-2, Wednesday: 1-2, Thursday: 2-3, Friday: 1:30-2:30 Equity Reps Anyone who volunteers to train and survey!

PURPOSE Everyone deserves to feel comfortable in spaces on campus Everyone uses the washroom Very basic facility that can be taken for granted Educational institution- not only would not having access to a washroom prohibit comfort and learning, but as students it is our responsibility to think critically about these spaces and challenge implicit and explicit systems and spaces of oppression Ultimately this sends a message: St.FX is an inclusive and open community that believe that everyone should feel, safe, welcomed and comfortable on campus

INSPIRATION…

“OFFICIAL DIMENSION” Eye level: 43"-51” Length: 48” Width: 30” Height: 30” Arm reach: meters Handrails of a ramp: 30"-34" above the ground The ramp must have a level surface of at least 5' x 5' at the door with at least 24" past the latch side of the door to allow for entry. A landing is required every 30 feet of run to allow the wheelchair bound individual to rest. Bathroom door must be a minimum of 36" wide. Everyone’s experience will be different and there is no perfect dimension that means a washroom in accessible for all…

CONSIDERATIONS Signage? Consider the entire building (gendered residences) Is the building accessible (ramps?) Are there elevators? Accessible, large, and on same level as handicap friendly doors Is there space in the washroom to turn around Is the door big enough? Is the stall big enough? Could someone in a wheel chair reasonably reach amenities (stall, sink, paper towel dispenser, baby change table) Take more notes than on the audit form  consider urinals, feminine hygiene disposals, and obstructions to accessibility etc.

BRAINSTORM Other surveying considerations? Language? Labeling? Have we missed anything? How should we get people educated and involved?
