Yr 10 Chemistry Environmental Chemistry: Global Warming Experiment

 TO KNOW the terms independent, dependant and control variables.  TO BE ABLE TO complete an experiment safely and draw tables and graphs.  TO UNDERSTAND how to interpret graphs to write a conclusion. Objectives

SpongeBob Clean Pants SpongeBob noticed that his favorite pants were not as clean as they used to be. His friend Sandy told him that he should try using Clean-O detergent, a new laundry soap she found at Sail- Mart. SpongeBob made sure to wash one pair of pants in plain water and another pair in water with the Clean-O detergent. After washing both pairs of pants a total of three times, the pants washed in the Clean –O detergent did not appear to be any cleaner that the pants washed in plain water. 1.What was the problem SpongeBob wanted to investigate? 2.What is the independent variable? 3.What is the dependent variable? 4. What do you think SpongeBob’s conclusion should be?

1.What was the problem SpongeBob wanted to investigate? His pants are not as clean as they use to be 2. What is the independent variable? Clean- O Detergent 3. What is the dependent variable? Cleanness of his pants 4. What do you think SpongeBob’s conclusion should be? Whether using plain water or Clean-O detergent, his pants are not getting any cleaner

 Date  Title: Investigating Greenhouse Gases  Aim: To observe the temperature rise and drop of the greenhouse gases In Your Lab Books

Time (s)Temperature ( 0 C) AirMethane Results Table Time (s)Temperature ( 0 C) AirMethane Heating Cooling

 Seal the top of a 1L conical flask with parrafin was and tape.  Insert the thermometer through the seal on the top. Use the retort stand to keep the bottom of the probe in the centre of the flask.  Place the lamp next to the flask. Measure this distance and record it.  Turn the lamp on and start timing. Measure the temperature every 20sec for 5 minutes. (record in the heating table)  Turn the lamp off and measure the temperature every 20sec for 5 min. (record in the cooling table)  Repeat the same procedure with methane gas (bunsen burner gas). Method

 Draw two graphs:  I for heating the gases.  1 for cooling the gases Results Use Graph Paper

 Compare methane and air in terms of heating and cooling. (use your graphs) Conclusion

 Prepare a chemical reaction to produce carbon dioxide.  Conduct the same experiment.  Which is a better greenhouse gas (methane or carbon dioxide)? Extension
