Preparation for Orientation Attendance  Uversity (Facebook “Schools App”)  Intended to engage population beyond 25% who attend live “O”  Goals: Provide key info, facilitate social connection, “Q&A”  Connects students with common interests within private space  Measurables: 5,500 posts, 1,900 ‘friendships’, 670 questions  Benefits:  Creates live portal into collective ‘mind’ of 1 st yr students  Encourages authentic communication with peers, leaders, staff  Increased registration/participation in ‘live’ Orientation events

Approaches to Online Orientation  Desire 2 Learn (D2L)  VisualZen  Homegrown Solutions

Desire to Learn (D2L)  It starts with the Admissions process  Students create a Net ID and password as part of the Admissions process after applying for a given semester  This NET ID and password becomes their login information for D2L  Tutorial  Students are directed to a D2L tutorial via once they have paid their enrollment deposit  This tutorial gives students the basic knowledge to navigate D2L  The Tabs  Content Tab: Reading materials, Orientation slides/presentations/videos, Important Contact information, Student Success Guide, Academic Advising information  Quizzes: Check for understanding type built within D2L  Discussion: Still under development but a way for students to post questions and have other student’s help with answers (peers, orientation leaders, campus mentors, faculty)

Visual Zen  Online Orientation available as an addition to the registration management system for an additional fee (fees based on your campus population)  Upload content as text or videos (YouTube, etc.)  Students complete modules  Ability to insert test questions to assess students’ comprehension of the information

“Homegrown” Solutions  Content built onto existing institution’s website  Mostly text, video, and checklists  Ordered according to time of cycle (or major topic themes)  New platform built from scratch  Advantage: Can be coded/designed to suit your exact needs  Challenge: Requires technical expertise, time and money  LaunchPad: Provides key info, social and Q&A in ‘gamified’ platform
