Reading Writing Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling (GPS) English assessment

Reading test 60 minutes to read booklet and answer questions (more than one text type e.g. stories, poems, explanations, interviews, accounts) Texts become progressively more difficult through the booklet Note: children MUST refer to the text when they answer questions.

Different types of questions Short answers/multiple choice 1 mark Several line answers 2 marks Longer answers 3 marks

Example... (1 mark) Find and copy the word which suggests that the Tower of Pisa has stopped moving. (up to 2 marks) How can you tell that Emily is a big fan of Rosie Ambrose? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.

Assessing Independent Writing Each piece of recent independent writing completed by pupils during lessons is assessed in detail by the teachers. The children are then assessed as: working below Year 6 standard working towards Year 6 standard working at Year 6 standard working deep within the Year 6 standard.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS) Test format Punctuation, sentence-grammar and vocabulary will all be assessed by a series of short-answer questions in a variety of formats.

Where will the children sit the test? What help will my child receive during the test? What equipment will my child need? What happens if my child is ill on the day? When will my child know how well they have done?

How can I help my child at home? Encourage them to revise regularly. Ask them to explain their revision to you. Ask questions about their revision to reinforce the information. Ask questions about the characters/layout of the text etc. in their reading. Allow them to get plenty of rest. Make sure they have a good breakfast. Get them here on time
