 There are a variety of reasons why teachers are reluctant to access technology.  Teachers may be:  Intimated by technology  Fear of change  Not enough training  Errors associated with technology Module 516

 How can an Effective School Web Site Help The Savvy School Leader Expand the Learning Community.  As savvy school leaders we are all aware of the importance of creating a sense of learning community both within our school and throughout the community at large.  The following information on school web sites is based on the article, “District Web Site Essentials”, by Laura Bona.  Through the use of a school website you can: 1.Further promote the creation of a professional learning community within the school. 2.Build your capacity as a school leader by including and involving active participation from parents and community members in supporting the mission and goals of the school. 3.The school web site becomes the new front door. 1. Who will be interested in exploring my school web site? 2. What types of information should be available on the web site to address the interests of the different audiences? 3. How should information be presented so that it is maximally helpful to identified participants? Module 521

 Your schools web site should be welcoming, well organized and an engaging destination for teachers, students, parents and the community.  Your school web site should function as an integral component in creating a learning community environment among the members of the school community.  Your school web site acts as a means of promoting a learning community both within and outside the schoolhouse doors.  Consistency and clarity are critical to a web sites looks and feel.  The site design should be well-organized, uncluttered, and appealing to the widest of audiences.  Acronyms and abbreviations that have internal meaning should be avoided, as they often make no sense to your visitors.  Too many choices will overwhelm, and unnecessary redundancy will confuse your visitors.  It is suggested that the date be placed in a prominent location on each page of your schools web site.  This way visitors to your school web site will know how current the information is they are seeing. Module 524

 Navigation tabs, be they bars across the bottom or a tab on the pages or in left or right side boxes, must be clearly named.  To aid visitors further when traveling around your school web site, a Breadcrumb Trail (links that appear atop pages to introduce the path to follow, and also allowing a quick retracing of steps) is a helpful and worthwhile feature.  One school uses a school bus figure, for visitors to use in navigating their web site.  There should also be a link back to the home page on every page of the web site.  Your school web site should provide easy navigation to the separate pages for clubs, athletics, classrooms and other school groups.  This is not only informative for visitors, it also provides a mechanism for advertising the accomplishments of your students and staff. Module 526

 How about a link to local real estate companies for parents looking to relocate in your school community.  How about links to social services, health agencies, libraries, museums, etc. Module 527

 There are many ways that a school can take advantage of the unique interactivity and opportunity for community engagement offered through a school web site. - Information seeking and feedback surveys on school culture, parent involvement, a new program or initiative. -Discussion Board, to promote school and community- wide dialogue on a particular topic or issue.
