University of Central Florida Theme for Module 5 The Savvy School Leader Has Strategies to Support Teachers Reluctant to Integrate Technology in Their Classrooms Module 51

Goals for this Module  To become familiar with the application of technologies for administrative and instructional use that are currently available to teachers and students in our schools.  To review several terms that are common in conversation regarding planning for technology integration. Module 52

Goals for this Module  To gain insight into reasons why teachers are reluctant to integrate technology into their classrooms.  To gain insight on how the savvy school leader uses a school web site to further expand a learning community. Module 53

 To develop strategies to support teachers in overcoming reluctance to integrate technology in their classrooms. Module 54

Leadership Quotation No improvement effort has ever succeeded in the absence of thoughtfully planned and well- implemented professional development. T.R. Guskey & K.S. Yoon Module 55

Reflection Activity Take a minute to review the quotation by Gusky & Yoon on the previous slide. Write down what you believe Gusky & Yoon is communicating to each of you as school leaders. Use a maximum of 5 sentences for your reflection. Module 56

Learning the Language of Technology Module 57

Activity  Define the vocabulary words listed adjacent.  After each definition, create a few lines as if in a conversation with a teacher, parent, tech director, or student at your school regarding a technology issue.  Spoofing  Search Engine  Twisted Pair  gif  blog  Intranet  Cookie Module 58

Review The savvy school leader uses technology to expand their leadership capacity in five very important ways. 1. Developing his or her school budget. 2. Creating a Professional Learning Community in his or her school 3. Enhancing learning opportunities for students 4. Providing effective, efficient, and relevant professional development for faculty and staff 5. Analyzing data for school wide planning and decision making Module 59

Providing Professional Development for Faculty and Staff Module 510

Professional development for faculty and staff should be effective, efficient and relevant. Module 511

As a result of technology, teachers say their jobs are easier (74%), they communicate more with parents about their children’s progress (47%), their lesson plans and student's learning experiences are richer because of information from the Internet and multimedia opportunities (47%), and students take a more active role in their learning (47%). Project Tomorrow, 2006 Module 512

Professional Development “It is estimated that over 30 hours of in-service or professional development training are required for teachers to feel comfortable with technology integration.” Bernie Poole, Education for and Information Age, 7 th Edition Module 513

The Reluctant Teacher Module 514

Reluctant Teachers “There has been a great deal of hype about the computer as a tool for teaching. Perhaps it is in the nature of the profession, but teachers are more skeptical than most about the advent of yet another fad, yet another experimental methodology, yet another pedagogical imposter destined to come and go like so many others.” Bernie Poole, Education for an Information Age, 7 th Edition Module 515

 There are a variety of reasons why teachers are reluctant to access technology.  Teachers may be:  Intimated by technology  Fear of change  Not enough training  Errors associated with technology Module 516

Why are teachers reluctant to integrate technology in their classrooms?  Consider the reasons for reluctance in the text of the previous slide.  Develop five additional reasons why you believe teachers are reluctant to integrate technology in their classrooms. Module 517

Assignment: Areas of Reluctance Create one strategy you can use as a savvy school leader to eliminate or seriously reduce the reluctance being caused by this condition for each of these reasons:  Intimated by Technology  Fear of Change  Not Enough Training  Errors Associated With Technology Module 518

 How can an Effective School Web Site Help The Savvy School Leader Expand the Learning Community.  As savvy school leaders we are all aware of the importance of creating a sense of learning community both within our school and throughout the community at large.  The following information on school web sites is based on the article, “District Web Site Essentials”, by Laura Bona. Module 519

 Through the use of a school website you can: 1.Further promote the creation of a professional learning community within the school. 2.Build your capacity as a school leader by including and involving active participation from parents and community members in supporting the mission and goals of the school. 3.The school web site becomes the new front door. Module 520

1. Who will be interested in exploring my school web site? 2. What types of information should be available on the web site to address the interests of the different audiences? 3. How should information be presented so that it is maximally helpful to identified participants? Module 521

 Your schools web site should be welcoming, well organized and an engaging destination for teachers, students, parents and the community.  Your school web site should function as an integral component in creating a learning community environment among the members of the school community.  Your school web site acts as a means of promoting a learning community both within and outside the schoolhouse doors. Module 522

 Consistency and clarity are critical to a web sites looks and feel.  The site design should be well-organized, uncluttered, and appealing to the widest of audiences.  Acronyms and abbreviations that have internal meaning should be avoided, as they often make no sense to your visitors.  Too many choices will overwhelm, and unnecessary redundancy will confuse your visitors. Module 523

 It is suggested that the date be placed in a prominent location on each page of your schools web site.  This way visitors to your school web site will know how current the information is they are seeing. Module 524

 Navigation tabs, be they bars across the bottom or a tab on the pages or in left or right side boxes, must be clearly named.  To aid visitors further when traveling around your school web site, a Breadcrumb Trail (links that appear atop pages to introduce the path to follow, and also allowing a quick retracing of steps) is a helpful and worthwhile feature.  One school uses a school bus figure, for visitors to use in navigating their web site.  There should also be a link back to the home page on every page of the web site. Module 525

 Your school web site should provide easy navigation to the separate pages for clubs, athletics, classrooms and other school groups.  This is not only informative for visitors, it also provides a mechanism for advertising the accomplishments of your students and staff. Module 526

 How about a link to local real estate companies for parents looking to relocate in your school community.  How about links to social services, health agencies, libraries, museums, etc. Module 527

 There are many ways that a school can take advantage of the unique interactivity and opportunity for community engagement offered through a school web site. - Information seeking and feedback surveys on school culture, parent involvement, a new program or initiative. -Discussion Board, to promote school and community- wide dialogue on a particular topic or issue. Module 528

 Complete the reflection assignment on your school’s web site.  Let’s see how close your school’s web site resembles some of the components suggested by Laua Bona. Module 529
